The NHTSA has crash tested the '06 Rio: Front: Driver 4 stars, Passenger 5 stars Side: Front and Rear, 3 stars IMO, for an all-new design with side bags and curtains, these results are pretty poor. It proves I guess that there's more to crash protection than bags of air. I'll see what happens in the IIHS tests, but I'm not too optimistic since those tests are tougher. This probably eliminates the Rio for me. Hopefully its cousin the Accent will fare better. http://www.safercar.gov/NCAP/Cars/3757.html

It's approximately the same weight as the Rio. So with the benefit of a current design and six airbags, I did expect better from the Rio, especially on side impacts. Five stars for the driver would be real nice too. I am hopeful that the Accent will do better, since it has a different body structure and Hyundai has a tendency to out-perform Kias based on the same platform, e.g. Elantra does better than the Spectra in crash tests even though the Spectra is a newer design. |

Does anyone know if the new Rio 5 has been crash tested by the IIHS and what were the findings?
