Great article. The only glitch (to dwell on the negative...): "And it was the first car with fewer than 12 cylinders that Ferrari didn't hedge about calling a Ferrari. The word "Dino" was nowhere to be found upon it." Not exactly - Ferrari was racing inline fours during the 1950s, if I recall correctly, and probably sixes as well. All well before the Dino name. However it's true the twelves became synonymous with Ferrari during the '50s and '60s. I'd also say that all of these cars are exotics, in the sense that they were largely hand assembled up until the 348, generally rare and frighteningly expensive. It's fair to say the 288 GTO and F40 are supercars, and possibly invented the category -- the F40 broke the 200mph barrier back in 1987. The F40 is still a magnificent car, and it's telling that Enzo went with V8 for his most special road cars. That and the 288 GTO have always suggested to me that Enzo himself wasn't as hung up on V12's as many tifosi or the press. The V8s not only represented Ferrari to the public, but as you say they became the backbone of the company as the V12s found their way into GT and touring cars like the modern 575M/599/612. And you're right about the F355. Even the stock exhaust delivers an incredible sound. The others can be amazing in this regard as well -- I have a Tubi exhaust on my 328, and unless there's a Daytona or Spyder California nearby it's the best automotive symphony in my ZIP code. |
