This looks to be a great car for those that can restrain themselves when it comes to options. Start adding things like 18" wheels, the 6-speed with PASM option, xenon lights, etc. and you will eat into a substantial enough amount of the $9,500 savings, that you would probably be better off going with a Cayman S and having the extra power to boot. Which, by the way is not insignificant. The difference between a base Cayman and Cayman S in power and performance is about double the difference between the base Carrera and Carrera S. And I would still advise anyone adding 19" wheels, PASM and xenons to a base Carrera to give the S serious consideration. Interesting other note. A friend who is a certified Porsche fanatic (owns a mint 356, has a 996TT, getting a 997TT) was at the factory several weeks ago. He believes that the most significant advancement in the new breed of 911's, Caymans and Boxsters is, in fact PASM. All of his Porsche engineering buddies at the factory agree. It allows you to go from a comfortable road car to a serious handling and track capable car at the push of a button. With every previous model, you had to choose one or the other. His 996TT would rattle your fillings loose. He would never buy a new Porsche without PASM, at any price.

Replying to: KarenS (Aug 01, 2006 7:19 am) I test drove the Cayman and Cayman S back to back. I bought the base Cayman; it felt lighter and more tossable than the S. The difference in power was only really detectable in pulling hard from 70mph without downshifting. For what I wanted - a fantastically well-balanced and capable handler - the base Cayman was just as good as the S. Replying to: jordom3 (Aug 28, 2006 8:29 am) I bought a Cayman off the lot 3-weeks ago. The only options I really wish I had would be the 18" wheels and sport steering wheel. I'm still breaking it in, but the car is a blast. Reminds me a lot of my '95 Miata R-package, except it feels carved out of billet steel. Obviously, I to was much more concerned with something "fantastically well-balanced and capable..." over brute power. Monthly before Tax: $498.82 Drive-off with 1st month: $4,038 MF: I belive it works out to about 7.5% I broke a golden rule and purchased this car strictly on the amount down and monthly. We had issues trying to get any local Porsche dealers to follow up, even though we have a 2003 Boxster (that would include our previous salesman). After writing a letter, we got the franchise owner involved and we feel he's made us a fair offer, although obviously certain items are subject to change. We too were geared towards the monthly payment. I absolutely love my Boxster, so I'm sure this car will be great fun too. There aren't that many Boxsters around here, so there certainly will be less Caymans. Thanks for your input!

Looks like you got a great deal too, and verified that my doc and license fees were indeed padded. But I belive my purchase price was straight invoice, so they had to pad it somewhere. I know I got the straight MF from Porsche Finance. Happy motoring!
