If you are that concerned about it, take it back to the dealer. It is still under warranty, isn't it?

My auto liftback also does the same. I never thought it was a problem, just the way the car drives. Don't know why... never tried to find out because it just doesn't bother me.

I don't know about the self adjusting trans thing. This is the first I've heard of that. However, my wife commented that our liftback sometimes seems to shift "funny." Now, I don't really notice it when I drive, but she has commented on it more than once. I think the shifting is electronically controlled and the way one applies the accelerator might affect how the transmission shifts.

I would suggest 2 things. First, check the owners manual for information on the transmission. The manual sometimes provides some unique details about the car that you would not otherwise know. Second, I would definitely take it to a dealer and let someone else drive the car while you ride along. In that way you could point out the problem and maybe determine whether it is related to driving style.

If the characteristic is present with any driver and the dealer just blows you off I would take it up direct with the manufacturer. You still might not get anything done, but at least it would be reported. You never know when something like this might lead to a recall some day.

You do lead a sheltered life... Without getting into the quagmire of certain Toyota AT problems covered in other forums, all modern automatic transmissions are "self-adjusting". They're now under the control of computers to continually set and adjust shift quality according to engine RPMs, temperature, vehicle speed, engine load, and, not least importantly, operator driving style - aggressive drivers get a somewhat firmer shift over time, while more temperate drivers enjoy a settling-in of consistently smoother shift quality. Once a predominent pattern is established, the shift control computer will automatically compensate for long-term clutch pack wear to maintain the established shift quality until it's rebuild time. Prior to computer controls, automatic transmission shift points were modulated strictly by engine intake manifold vacuum - and doing so worked fairly well to a point. But I'm old enough to remember my dad taking the family '55 Plymouth with its two-speed "PowerFlyte" transmission in for a periodic band adjustment every 12,000 miles where the technician would adjust for clutch band accumulated wear to re-establish the proper shift point feel. How many of you reading this remember ever having had to do any such thing?

I remember having the bands adjusted HAHA I'm a "old Guy". This, along with others is why I got the 5 speed MT. I am sick and tired of trannys just failing one day for a whole lot of money and time getting it repaired. The MT's will give you years of warning IF they are goint to go out and give you extra power as well. The Yaris is so light and quiet that with my radio on I can't hear the engine and I am trying to save the clutch so I am trying to keep the RPMs down at take off. Well I have stalled it in traffic about three times now. Dang I hate that...so I guess it will just take some time. This is my first MT in years.

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing for the first couple thousand miles and still ocassionally until I sold it to my son and got an automatic transmission. Now I don't have that problem any more.

I always thought that automatic transmission were better than manual transmission

My Corolla did that, and I just lubed the pivot points where the shift cables attach to the transmission. 5 minute job. I would take back to your dealer.

Rule of thumb always......go by the service manual specifications! Factory manual is the best way to go. I have seen way too many mistakes in Haynes and Chilton's!

A good mechanic never assumes he/she has the correct answer. If I went by history, it would be fill to the level. But I would not assume, I would check the service manual. That also gives you the correct service interval and fluid type.

That factory manual may be expensive from the dealer, but it is well worth it in the long haul.
