Spy photos of the new 2008 Armada are floating around the net (see Straightline). What would you like to see added to the new Armada?

Something that will swallow 4x8 sheets of paneling with the tailgate closed. • A 6-speed automatic. We are seeing more and more 6-speeds on trucks, and Nissan should also offer one. • In Australia (and other markets too) Nissan offers a state-of-the-art, 2.5L common-rail, 4-valve, DOHC 4-cylinder diesel. Take 2 of those engines and make a 5.0L diesel V8, and/or a 3.75L diesel V6. • Integrated trailer brake control ala the Ford Super Duty's "Tow Command," with electric brake controller built into the dash. • I'd like to see the "Auto 4WD" mode become a "full-time 4WD" mode, rather than a "on-demand 4WD" mode that it currently is. • I'd like to see a "basic" trim level offered with rubber floor covering (no carpeting). That should do it for starters... Bob |

Bob, the AWD mode is not on-demand on the Armada. If you have it in Auto-4wd it is AWD with a 20/80 torque split (aproximately) and it works great. If you want full-time AWD just leave it in the Auto-mode. I usually have mine in 2wd unless it's rainy or snowy out and then I flip it to Auto. Basic trim level? Not gonna see that, heck even the base model of the Armada comes with very good features on it, why woudl you want something with a rubber floor? Go for the titan if you want that! Integrated brake controller would be nice. Diesel is already in the works for the 2010 MY on the Titan and Armadas. I belive it's a 6.4L engine. 6-speed would be ok, but the 5speed works as smooth as butter, no real need IMO for it. Extended length would be great, I'd welcome it. I'd like to see HIDs as an option, heated steering wheel, and heated 2nd row buckets would also be nice. Otherwise I cannot say I would want anything else done. Amazinly after 2 years if someone gave me an unlimited amount of cash to buy another SUV, I'd get the same one with the upgrades for 07/08 (Power folding mirrors with signals, 317hp) -mike

Mike, I would be delighted to know if in fact it does AWD 20/80, and is it without locking the center differential, because if it is locked then not good for dry pavement I guess. The manual I read so far it states in Auto 4WD mode it drives 100% rear wheels, and if needed it would transfer up to 50% to front wheels. Where did you get this 20/80 info from? I have never seen those numbers even though I am researching this truck for more than 2 years. Any info on this would be really nice. Thanks, -haro |

It is not locked until you put it in 4wd Hi or 4wd Lo then it get's locked in 50/50. It has a variable center diffy that varies power F/R. There is no hard documentation on the torque split however, from people at Nissan that I know and others I've spoken to, have said 20/80 The AWD on the QX56 is the same, except it is only setup in the AWD mode (the Lo Range and Hi range locking and 2wd is enabled) It is definitely not 0/100 split as I've done a lot of testing on snow/low traction surfaces and in 2wd you spin the rears, in AWD mode you don't spin the rears on takeoff or low traction conditions which means that there is some power going to the front axle even before slippage. Also if it were "auto" in that it does 0/100 you would get the same milage on a highway trip with cruise control set if you were using the AWD or the 2WD settings, I consistently get get about 2 or 3 mpg better in 2wd v. AWD mode. So while I have no "hard facts" the circumstantial evidence definitely points to a 20/80 split (similar to that on the AWD mode on my previous Trooper) along with the un-documented Nissan folks who have let that out of the bag off the record -mike

Replying to: paisan (Nov 26, 2006 8:27 pm) I will need to read the manual for one more time now If this is the case, i.e. my Armada has AWD mode for dry pavement, then I am more than happy. Still I don't understand the difference between QX56's AWD and Armada's 4WD. -haro |

I can tell you there is a disctinct amount of power given to the front wheels, having driven it a lot on icy/wet roads, I can tell you the grip given to the front wheels is definitely real, as I've forgotten it in 2wd a few times and immediately knew it on wet pavement. The QX56 is the same system, except that it does not have the switch panel to allow you to go to 2wd or to 4-hi/lock 4-lo/lock. Otherwise they are the same AWD system. They call it "auto-4wd" on the Armada. -mike

Replying to: paisan (Nov 26, 2006 10:07 pm) Also, something needs to done about the 3rd row seats. I understand that 3rd row seats are not always comfortable, especially for mid-size suvs, but for a truck the size of the Armada, you'd expect them to be more comfortable than what they are right now, even for adults. So in a way, I am endorsing the above mentioned idea of a longer wheelbase. One last thing. I would like Nissan to spend some more time on designing better interiors. The 2004-2006 Armada had a lousy interior. I do see some changes, looks a little better but is still below par. Hopefully, something will be done about it. |

Although in every article I've read, the reason for the 3rd row being a bit more cramped than it's competitors with 3rd rows is that the 2nd row is significantly larger than any of it's competitiors 2nd rows. I will tell you this past weekend, 4 of us who are not exactly small spent over 1200 miles in my Armada doing a drive to raise money for charity with a group of Subarus. We were the support vehicle carrying the supplies, spare parts, beer, food, prizes to give out. We were quite comfortable. When it came time to go to dinner from the hotel at night, we piled in 7 rather portly adults for the 5 mile trip to dinner with ease. I wouldn't have wanted to do more than 20 miles with that many people but it did serve it's purpose. Problem with a LWB truck is that your towing will generally go down due to the extra weight on the chassis, it's a hard call. I believe they'll bump the HP and towing though to compete with the upcoming 10k+ towing of the new Toyota Sequoia based on the towing capacity of the new Tundra. I sat in the new Tundra and while the interior is a hair better than the Armada in terms of fit and finish (and the newer Armadas are probably better than my 04) it really wasn't anything to write home about and was significantly narrower than the Armada. I'd actually prefer a diesel over more HP if they had to make a choice. Another option could be a NISMO aftermarket Supercharger that can be installed and is covered under the warranty, similar to the TRD Superchargers offered by Toyota, that would give folks the option of adding more power without increasing the cost of the vehicle to those folks who don't need/want the power. -mike |

My '03 Expedition had better overall interior packaging. Even the third row seat was decent in that truck. On the hole, though, the Nissan kicks the Expedition's ass! That's why we bought it. You guys are nuts about the whole horsepower thing. This truck has more than a beast like this probably ought to (not complaining, mind you). Anything this big that can hit 60mph under 7 seconds is plenty fast and I have not noticed any shortage of power even when it is loaded down and towing my boat. What the Armada lacks in interior space it makes up for in overall packaging. It has great ground clearance. The longish wheel base does make it a bit less manueverable, but the re-engineered ride of the '08 is really good. Only a slight revision in rebound dampening (read: stiffer) is needed to keep things in better check over big, harsh bumps. Of course, we'd all like better gas mileage, but it is what it is with something this big and heavy. A diesel option could be good, or a hybrid. Sadly, after '10 it won't likely matter. It looks like this truck will be going the way of the dinosaurs. Oh, well! |
