99 Sportage keeps dying [96k miles] by prego

Every so often my Sportage just WILL NOT start. I took my Sportage to the dealer two days ago but they couldn't find the problem. I have a brand new [diehard] battery, but once in a while the car is dead. I put the key in the ignition and all the icons that are supposed to illuminate will come up but when I turn the key to start-it, nothing happens. I will come back--let's say--two hours later, it will start immediately (as if nothing had ever gone wrong). Sometimes I have to wait two days for it to start. It has nothing to do with weather or relative atmospheric humidity. It just does it once in a while (every 6 months or so). The dealer checked the alternator and they say that it is fine. They did clean all the connections to the alternator. I brought the car home from the dealer went inside to get some stuff to run errands. I came out about 15 minutes later and the car wouldn't start!!!!!! I love this car but I need one that can be depended on to start. Any ideas? I'm going to bring it to a new repair place if I can get it started.

once that would do this and I had to get out, open the hood and bop the starter solenoid with a screwdriver's head a few times. Then I'd hop back in and the little ponycar would fire right up!

It is worth trying anything and everything now so try it(I don't know if the Sportage's have starter solenoids, sorry)or ask the dealer about starter solenoids, or any other part that has starting your Sportage in it's job description. Your dealer is supposed to be able to help you in these types of matters. Post back what you find out. I own a '01 Kia Sportage 4x4 with 124,900 miles, so I'm keenly interested in what you find out. Good fortune to you, prego.

'95 sportage ABS Problem by dufoursd

I recently bought a '95 Sportage 4x4 4dr. base Mdl. and the ABS light is always on. I ran the diagnostics (9 flashes) and was directed to check out the speed sensor & ABS Control Unit. Speed sensor ckd. out OK. To my surprise, when I removed the padded panel beneath the stearing column, there was no ABS Control Unit! I called the dealer and gave them my VIN# and they told me my ar did NOT have ABS??? Why is the ABS light on in the dash if it does not have ABS? Anyone???

1998 Kia Sportage Paint Problems by canestrare

I leased a 1998 Kia Sportage. During my ownership of this
vehicle the right front fender treatment (which was painted
a different color than the car) paint started to peel off.
I brought the car back to the dealer and they replaced it
at no charge. After that incident the other 3 fender treatments and the rocker panel treatments began to experience the same problems with the paint peeling off. I did not have them repaired as I was about to turn the car in due to lease end. At the time of turn in to the dealer this problem was noted by the dealer. They have tried to collect damages from me for this problem and I refuse to pay! Does anyone know of articles that have been published concerning this problem?

I own a 2006 V6 4x4 and it is an awesome SUV. I do not know why you experienced this problem. However, I would not it deter you from them as they are great.

In 1998, my husband and I had a 1998 Kia Sportage with defective paint problems. The dealership actually had a guy come down from NJ. He inspected our Kia and determined the paint was defective from factory and they replace the vehicle with a new 2000 Kia Sportage. He told us they could try and repaint the vehicle but under warranty we would just be back again with paint problems before the warranty was up and they would then have to keep repainting the vehicle. It was easier to just replace the defective one. The dealer needs to have someone come in and inspect this paint job from Corporate then the dealership would get their money. You shouldn't be responsible for this defect. It took him six weeks before he could look at it but he flew in to MD from NJ to inspect it. He was a ex-paint specialist from Dodge Motor Corp.

Hello,

I urge you NOT to purchase a 2006 Kia sportage. We bought one last feb and are in the process of completing paperwork to pursue a Lemon Law case. Our 2006 sportage stalls in traffic.... without warning. It is an usafe vehicle. Ours has been in the shoppe for repairs 3 times. the first time, they said it was a clogged thing a ma jig.... which they claimed to have fixed and guaranteed the issue was resovled. Within 1 week we were back for the SAME stalling issue... this time they replaced the throttle and said it was fixed... this lasted for about 2.5 months and it stalled again. I drive my children in this car... everytime i go thru and intersection, i hold my breath wondering if the engine is going to stall and will this be the time we get hit!! It is a horrible car... cute, but not safe.

Hi!
Just had a similair problem. I have a 2000 Sportage. In the past 2 months i had to have them replace the spark pulled. One came unthreaded (almost blew out of the cyclinder) and melted/bent over and was causing a small fire each time it sparked. We fixed that $400 and then about a week later, i couldn't seem to get it past 45mph on the highway. Turned out to be a clogged catalytic converter. Going to cost $1700 to fix because Kia decided to make theirt converter in two pieces. Very spendy! I have had the car since 2002 and since then i have always had the check engine light on, replaced a fan clutch, sensor in the drive shaft, mechanical/spark plug issues and now the cat probs.
Good luck!
