Article comments for First Drive: 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI 4MATIC - Walk around to the front, nearer the engine, and there's the barely detectable plunkety-ping of a diesel engine. It's not any louder than the noise made by many modern gasoline engines; it's just different. (more)

You are absolutely right! I want to drive a diesel. I drove diesels for years and then MB quit sending the diesel wagon to the US. I drove a rabbit for many years as well. I don't like the new R too much, but the GL would be great - but only as a diesel. Toyota would shoot to the moon if they would sell a diesel in the US. I've read they have them in other parts of the world. Another thing - why wait til early '07 on the GL? The R and M are coming out in the fall.

I understand the CA emission law will not allow a new GL Diesel to be purchased or sold here. What if you purchased it in another state and then after it is 7000 mile old bring in to CA as a used vehicle? Is this allowed?

That won't work. I believe the law considers any with less the 7500 miles a "new" vehicle and prohibits the owner from driving the extra miles for the purposes of making it "used". There are a few exceptions i.e. Military, wrecked car, inherited.

My understanding is that you would have to be a resident of the other state in order to do this (i.e., you couldn't be a CA resident who buys a "new" (less that 7500 miles) vehicle in another state and then brings to CA, regardless of how many miles on vehicle when you try to register it. But if you register it AS A RESIDENT of the other state, that shouldn't be a problem.

I say screw Kalifornia, and all that messed up BS-you could alternatively go out and buy a Ford Powerstroke diesel "work" pickup which gets 14 mpg and spews black stuff-that's OK, apparently. Just not something that makes total and complete sense and actually furthers our independence on foreign oil suppliers while still delivering what we need in terms of space and comfort.

If i had to live there, i would do whatever it took to make it work, including titling the car in a relative's name who lives elsewhere.

I'm with you. It is so archaic the way CA uses their goofy laws that make little sense. I am thinking about buying the GL320 CDI and keeping it at my place in MN till it reaches 7500 miles. Or maybe just using it on vacation in CA for a couple years. More than one way to skin a cat. I have a friend here in SD that has the E320 CDI. He also has a home in TX. It is registered in TX. Loves the car. Best Mercedes he has ever owned.

I emailed MB to find out when the GL 320 would be released. All I got was the first quarter of 2007 as a 2008 model. Anyone else know any more? I suppose they are pushing the ML and R and E first.

As I drove by my fuel station last night I noticed the price of diesel at $2.49 and the price of High test at $2.35.
So, do I buy a more fuel efficient diesel and pay more for fuel, or buy a less efficient vehicle and pay less. Does it come out in the wash? Also MB tends to add a premium to the diesels, so that's another equation.

I think the premium on the E, R & ML CDI is about $1k. The diesel should get at least 33% better mileage. I'm not sure where you are. CA is notorious for high priced diesel Unleaded Premium and diesel are about the same right today.

Using your price for diesel and Premium it would take you about 30k miles to pay off that premium. Experience tells me that the diesel will hold its value slightly better than the MB gasser. So if you sell in 3 years you could come out somewhat ahead with the CDI. Plus not adding near as much CO2 (GHG) to the environment.
