I'm in the camp that generally prefers the styling of the A3 to the GTI, and I'm fairly comfortable admitting that that would be the primary reason I'd go Audi over VW.   That said, I targeted the A3 as a car of interest since it came out, but have not been able to justify the vehicle due to ridiculously poor lease rates. As Audi refuses to support the vehicle with proper lease incentives, quotes for a moderately equipped 2.0T on a 24-month lease topped $600/mo.   Last time I was car shopping I was disappointed by this fact and wound up going for an Infiniti G35 coupe- $525/mo for a $41k car versus $610/mo for a $35k car just seemed too logical to ignore. Now I'm shopping again and I'm really sad to see that things haven't changed.   To that extent, I'm thinking the 4-door GTI might be a logical runner up. Sure, I'm not a huge fan of the styling, but it's got all the things I need (including a good dose of practicality versus my coupe), and lease rates are considerably more favorable.   I don't think I'm the only one that's been put off by Audi's poor lease programs; I for one believe the A3 would've been a much more successful car if they could have provided better residual values and incentives. Replying to: joshknot (Jul 13, 2007 11:56 am) Josh, maybe you should consider a used A3. 2006 and 2007 models can be found for about 65-70% of MSRP now.   The A3 is a more upscale looking car, no doubt but as you pointed out, the leasing isn't supported. Replying to: blueguydotcom (Jul 13, 2007 12:53 pm) That's a very good point, blueguy- I've definitely been looking. Trouble is that I've gotten really happy with the worry-free life of leasing. I'm a serial car-driver, in that I tend to get ready for something different within a year or two no matter what I'm driving (case and point, the g35 coupe I have now is an absolutely wonderful car that's given me no trouble whatsoever and goes like stink, but I just want a change). I'm put off of buying a used car because a) I'll have to deal with selling it sooner than most people would, likely and b) having 100% warranty coverage has been great- I've enjoyed my car without the fear that something expensive *could* go wrong.   Still, I'm definitely looking at used A3's- seems that the poor residual value that hurts the leasing program has a positive effect on anyone looking to buy used. Replying to: joshknot (Jul 14, 2007 11:55 am) Look at it this way...   Say the car loses another 50% over the course of 3 years, that would mean you'd be out 11-12k (value of 11k) and that's an absolutely horrid worst case scenario. More than likely, the A3 will lose at most 50% of its value over 4 years so if you bought at 22k, you'd probably only spend 7-8k over 3 years on the car (resale value of maybe 14k).   I've hooked some sweet leases in my life but i've yet to find a 3 year lease on an audi/bmw/infiniti level product for 10-11k total.
