Reliability - built in different factories under differing quality standards; CR's results show the results! 2. 2006 free maintenance for 4 years/50K. 3. Interior is maybe not a world apart, but definitely a noticeable level apart. For example, look at the cargo lid, and the cargo carpeting material. Look at the dash; look at the real aluminum vents in the A3. 4. Either premium or sport package gives you a very nice leather wrapped steering wheel. 5. VW dealerships have a bad reputation for service. 6. Audi dealerships give you a free loaner/rental for warranty or service work. 7. Certain people on Edmunds noticed and posted that the A3 handled much better than the too high off the ground GTI. The GTI sold here apparently is more lifted than the one in Europe." I don't know what you are talking about....I choose a 2007 GTI over a 2006 Audi A3 and the difference in price was only 500 dollars more for the Audi. If we compare base models, the Audi comes with plastic steering wheel, plastic hand brake, regular seats, soft suspensions and in spite of its wagon shaped body with less cargo space. Unless you are after the badge is not a good deal. When the A3 comes with all the goodies the GTI has standard it approaches a BMW in price so however you look at, the Audi A3 is not a great choice for an enthusiast, maybe more for badge hunters or soccer moms.. Audi dealerships are known to be as bad as the VW ones. Audi A3 even with the sport package is still behind the GTI in handling(mostly probably because of its length).

The GTI beats the A3 on Edmund's slalom: 65.2 mph. vs 62mph, but...Edmund's notes that the A3 "was right at the top of second gear running through the slalom, so we had to run in third gear to avoid the rev limiter, but this hurt power/torque for accelerating out of the cones." 0-60 times for GTI range from 6.8 - 7.2 vs. 6.9 - 7.0 for the Audi. Yes, there is a price and image premium, along with the better material & ergonomic quality. IMO, Autoweek describes it best: With the A3 you get a "quiet and comforting cabin to retreat to at the end of a long workday. In this sense...the A3 separates itself from the likes of the Cooper Works Mini or even the GTI. The Audi is less frenetic, less an eager puppy begging you to come play, and more a friendly companion equally willing to cruise along easily or go quite quickly if that’s what you have in mind." |

the differences are still centered around brand image. Andres3 like his aluminum vents because they are aluminum. Whoopee. NO biggie at all. Fasterthanyou summed it up pretty well. The interior is styled differently, but the quality is almost identical. Don't get me wrong guys; i love the a3. I love the way it looks inside and out. But you know what? If i were to have one, i wouldn't feel high on a mountain because of my interior if someones gti pulled up. I'd get the car because i would personally have preferred the styling to the gti. (i acually don't i'm just saying this theoretically.) Personal preference. thats the case here. And the 'ooh' factor. I can imagine all my buddies going 'dude you got an audi? Nice!' simply because its an audi.

I recently bought an A3. I also looked at the VW GTI especially since I had a 1995 a while back and have I Passat currently. I have a preference for the VW. After driving the A3 and since my wife will be the primary driver, she expressed a preference for the A3. I agreed with her. We did not like the interior or the exterior of the GTI as much as the A3. It's a matter of looks at times. My wife wanted something that looked different from the Passat interior and the GTI has a similar look.

Used 2006 with 12k miles on it. Car's in perfect condition. My fiancee drove both and ended up going A3 because she loved the look, feel, etc. To her there's no way the GTI and A3 are the same. In fact, I planned on an GTI 4 door when I get rid of my 2006 330i at the start of April. Now I'm lost about what to buy as she has essentially the same car. She sees only the interiors and notices her car is softer; to her the GTI is sporty and brash like my 2003 BMW ZHP. To me, the GTI and A3 aren't that far apart...and I don't want to own two cars that are essentially the same thing. Variety is the spice of life...GTI to A3 in the same household is really just your wife putting on a different wig each night, same person, slightly different look. |

| and VW currently believes in making terribly unreliable vehicles. Audi has made the effort to make well built and dependable vehicles, and the records are showing that the results are better for Audi than VW. | |
