2002 VW Jetta 2.0 (A) NEED ADVICE! WILL DO ANYTHING111 by vwregretta

My 2002 jetta and I have nothing in common. Our relationship is going nowhere FAST, and the lemon layers don't think i have a case. I bought the car and applied for my IDIOT license in late January, only to have the engine light come on early may. It cost $800.00 for a piece of paper stating i need $8000.00 in work done. A NEW TRANNY!!! It remained in the shop from May to June, while I continuously fought with the dealer, warranty company, and manufacturer about who is responsible for the bill. While they were having it out, I'm trying to find a ride to the bank so i can make my car payment. YES. Clearly the $14,000 loan i just signed included a transmission, but i must have missed the fine print that says..........."parts don't have to function at all."
I am now on my 3rd transmission, and even though the car runs now, i'm planning for the future by watching for signs of transmission rejection. Does anyone have some info? A word? Anything? Oh yeah, and the engine light never went off.

Fist of all, there are MANY discrepancies in your post. Maybe if you clear these up it will make more sense!!!

You said in one of your posts that the 2 trannies cost you 16,000+. ???? Please explain. How many miles are on your Jetta? You stated that you have a GLX with the 2.0 engine. That's completely impossible. The GLX never came with the 2.0 4 Cyl engine. Do you have the VR6 or possibly a 1.8t.

Did you have a private mechanic inspect the car prior to you buying it? You installed the 2 new trannies you purchased? Most work is covered by some sort of warranty, did you look into that possibility?

Lastly (for now), you paid $14,000 for a 2002 Jetta?????

i assume you bought the car used in january from a dealer. was it a VW dealer? did the car come with a warranty, or was it sold "as-is." not sure why this wouldnt be covered under warranty-- i thought drive-train issues had a longer warranty than the other stuff.

Yep, 5 years or 60,000 miles is the drivetrain warranty on VWs.

I have a 1999.5 2.0L Jetta with transmission problems. Alot of slipping when trying to move off. I've read so many bad things about these cars and wish I never bought mine. I don't know how anyone can say that these cars are good with so many people having problems with them. The parts are ridiculously expensive ... $1200 for a catalytic converter only because the stock converter has a downpipe attached to it. This just sounds like another way for VW to suck the money out of their customers.

When I had my Civic, parts were very reasonable and the car never had problems. I also hear stories of VW's being in the shop for like a month ... a month? Its a car ... not a spaceship. These cars should never be in there for more than a day if the parts are available.

Bottom line is that no one should buy these cars unless they like their wallet to be gouged!

Hey guess what, emissions devices are 10 year unlimited mileage coverage provided there is no physical damage. Ask around BEFORE buying a car, Automatic and VW are 2 things that should NEVER be together. I know. I work at a VW repair shop. If a salesman's lips are moving, he is lying. Ask around the service counter not the sales dept. for advice on what to look for. All it takes is a little research before buying a car to save a lot of $$$. Buying from some curber, or broker means you bought somebody's problem. If you buy from a VW dealer, most cars come with 2 year bumper to bumper 40,000km VW warranty. Instead of calling all our cars crap, get your facts straight. My Jetta has 449,000km on it. What a piece of crap huh?

Just because you buy a VW with a manual transmission does not guarantee you will not have problems and get gouged by VW. There have been numerous clutch failures on 1.8 T cars and also on TDI cars due to dual mass flywheel grease leakage, ruining the clutch disc. Of course, VW, instead of admitting a design flaw and correcting the problem at their expense, ALWAYS blames the customer. If I lost a clutch at 2K miles and the manufacturer claimed that it was my driving habits, I would be mad too. And VW charges almost $ 2k to replace clutches with dual mass flywheels at the owner's expense.

Futhermore, I read numerous complaints about manual transmissions falling apart after just a few thousand miles. Where do they build these transmissions In China?

no, i never had it inspected prior to buying. i'm an idiot. however, it was a friend from an AA meeting, whom i thought i could trust and never saw this coming. But to clarify things, the car has 68,000 miles now, but had 61,500 when i bought it. The price i was quoted for the first one was $8,000 all together. i had to fight to get the warranty and the dealer i bought the car from to pay for these expensive repairs-TWICE! They put 2 USED transmissions in the car over a 2 month time span because the car continued to slip with the new one. the shop i took the car to was the manufacturer in my area (not the place i bought it from).

Also, When the vin number is ran, (for example, my insurance company ran it) it comes back 2002 VW Jetta GLS (not X) 4D, and when i pop the hood, its clearly written on the block cover "2.0"

i hope this clarifies things, if you have any further advice or questions, please reply. It sounds like you know your stuff!
Thanks,
Lauren
