Accord with 4WD by kullenberg

It would seem to me, that an Accord Hybrid with the 4WD system on the Acura RL, would be a great vehicle. The engineering can't be too tough, as the platforms are basically the same, or similar. Any thoughts?

kullenberg,

The RL is a heavier vehicle. Full-time AWD or 4WD systems eat up more fuel. Both factors mitigate that an RL hybrid (if it were ever to be built) would get poorer mileage than the current Accord hybrid that has only marginally better mileage than the non-hybrid Accord.

The real neat application for hybrid tech is an electric rear motor(s) to give on-demand 4wd. 0 drive line loss and $0 extra maintenance cost and wear and tear. You have a FWD car/suv until you need the extra traction and then you have the electric power to the rears to give you the grip you need. This is what Toyota did on the hybrid suvs like the Lexus.

I test drove the new RL and the "super handling AWD" did not impress me much. The lame shifting auto transmission and the really small back seat didn't do much for me either. Loved the NAV and stereo integration and voice command. The new GS from Lexus and the new M from Infiniti are much nicer driving cars for about the same money.

Have you seen the latest Consumer Reports? They did not like the RL much, but they liked the new GS300 even less (said it was not that comfortable or sporty). They picked the new Infiniti M35x (all wheel drive) for best luxury car, and said the TL and Avalon are better choices than the RL or new GS.

Maybe an all or 4 wheel drive TL Hybrid would make more sense than a HAH 4 wheel drive based on the added cost perspective alone.
