Test Drive, First Impressions by rocketman51

Just got back from test driving the HAH. First impressions where positive. Car was tight and nimble. Almost erie quiet when engine shuts off at stop light. Handling felt OK, but not as good as current car (94 Acura Legand). My commute is 275 miles one way, this is why I am looking at this car. I will most likely purchase one in the next 60 days or so. I wish that HID headlights were standard, but I will upgrade to aftermarket kit if stock lights do not have enough output. For info, Fog lamp kit is available as dealer installed option. $$$???. Prices here in Bakersfield, CA are $30,655 for non nav system car. Lots of good info on this form.
Tnx

I too had some sticker shock in regards to the factory fog lights. I did get them however, and was pleasantly surprised at the quality. They are quite good. As for the stock head lights I agree fully. Wish they were HID. They aren't bad for Halogens but...

I strongly recomend against HID kits. They will not provide the quality you expect and often cause too much glare for oncoming traffic. Never a good idea to get more light for yourself at the expense of others! I am getting a retrofit done on some after market housings I bought. This requires having HID projectors installed and is not only legal if done right but gives you OEM quality. It does cost more but if HID is important to you it is the only real option. There is a good resourse at hidplanet.com.

Cheers.

Hi, I did not check the price on the fog lights. I suspect in the $400 - $500 range if installed by dealer. Am I close?

Fog lights installed by dealer cost almost $400.

Thank you so much. I hate those things glaring in my eyes.

Accord with 4WD by kullenberg

It would seem to me, that an Accord Hybrid with the 4WD system on the Acura RL, would be a great vehicle. The engineering can't be too tough, as the platforms are basically the same, or similar. Any thoughts?

kullenberg,

The RL is a heavier vehicle. Full-time AWD or 4WD systems eat up more fuel. Both factors mitigate that an RL hybrid (if it were ever to be built) would get poorer mileage than the current Accord hybrid that has only marginally better mileage than the non-hybrid Accord.

The real neat application for hybrid tech is an electric rear motor(s) to give on-demand 4wd. 0 drive line loss and $0 extra maintenance cost and wear and tear. You have a FWD car/suv until you need the extra traction and then you have the electric power to the rears to give you the grip you need. This is what Toyota did on the hybrid suvs like the Lexus.

I test drove the new RL and the "super handling AWD" did not impress me much. The lame shifting auto transmission and the really small back seat didn't do much for me either. Loved the NAV and stereo integration and voice command. The new GS from Lexus and the new M from Infiniti are much nicer driving cars for about the same money.

Have you seen the latest Consumer Reports? They did not like the RL much, but they liked the new GS300 even less (said it was not that comfortable or sporty). They picked the new Infiniti M35x (all wheel drive) for best luxury car, and said the TL and Avalon are better choices than the RL or new GS.

Maybe an all or 4 wheel drive TL Hybrid would make more sense than a HAH 4 wheel drive based on the added cost perspective alone.
