June '06 Consumer Reports and VW by jpmccormac

The 6/06 issue of Consumer Reports magazine contains a review of the GTI and Honda Civic SI and a couple other sport coupes. The GTI came in first w/ a score of 96/100. The VW didn't get a recommended check mark because it's a "new model" w/ no repair history (in the USA anyway.) This bodes well for the Rabbit which is built on the same body, etc.

Rabbit Review

As you would expect in a German car, the interior is impeccably tailored and a solid feel is evident throughout.

So, as I should expect from a VW, will I need to take it to the snooty dealership a lot for unscheduled repairs? Or, has VW starting paying attention to quality? We'll see...cuz at the moment, VW is third WORST in the JD Power assoc. quality survey.

I like the Rabbit, but having been spoiled by Honda reliability and friendly Honda dealerships, it will be hard for me to risk leasing a trouble-prone Volkswagen and having to tolerate the self-righteous VW service dept. managers that come with it.
Everyone keep us posted on repair issues.

On the chart, what is the statistical difference between VW and Honda? On a VW the probability is 1.71 problems per vehicle. On a Honda the probability is 1.10 problems per vehicle.
Wow! 0.61 problems per vehicle is the difference between "friendly" and "reliable" vs. "self-righteous", "snooty" and "trouble prone".

Honda's are trouble prone. Honda's have to go to the dealer a lot for unscheduled repairs.

Are the above true statements? They are as true as the statements you made about VW based on the JD Power results you posted.
Based on the chart you posted both Honda and VW vehicles are likely to have ONE problem and a partial problem in
initial quality.

I don't know why someone would EXAGGERATE the difference by making such biased statements against VW? Perhaps the person simply hates VW and/or German car or they are irrationally drawn to Honda and/or Japanese makes. Perhaps the person simply does not have a grasp of what the quality statistics represent in the real world.

Given that Porsche is ranked the highest in reliability with Jaguar close by, that alone makes me laugh at this survey.

Don't get me wrong, Porsche is an amazing automaker, but it's no match for Honda/Toyota reliability, even initial.

I totally agree. The problems per vehicle differences are negligible. In fact both Consumer Reports and JD Powers have recently been accused of including more "subjective" categories in their surveys to create more obvious differences.

That having been said, a good dealer can make or break the VW ownership experience, and because only a few VW's are sold relative to Camry's, it is better to take them back to the dealer for service and repairs.

Not taking into account well-respected & comprehensive surveys...

VW dealerships remain snooty and self-righteous because
timid VW owners lube-up, bend-over, and take it.

I've been to three VW dealerships in my area and not one of them was at all "snooty" or "self-rightous" (whatever that is supposed to mean). The service departments were 100% pleasant to deal with. The sales departments were also for the most part pleasant...maybe 90% on that side.

The "snootiest" sales department I ever experienced was at a Toyota dealership...they even beat out a Jaguar dealership in that regard.

..."snooty" or "self-righteous" (whatever that is supposed to mean)...

Some definitions for you...

Snooty:
1) Snobbishly aloof; haughty.
2) High-class; exclusive.

Self-righteous:
1)Piously sure of one's own righteousness; moralistic.
2)Exhibiting pious self-assurance.

Hope that helps.

Regarding Toyota: Sadly, I am unable to shop at Toyota dealerships in the midwest these days, as I don't understand either Persian or Arabic.

Yeah, thanks...my parenthetical comment was only referring to the "self-righteous" term actually (snooty, I get), and was related to the context of using that adjective to describe a car dealer.

I guess I am just not sure how a car dealer acts when he is piously sure of his own righteousness, is moralistic, or is exhibiting pious self-assurance. So I guess the dictionary definition of the word is not a lot of help...but thanks for trying .
