Several owners have mentioned the Civic's uncomfortable headrests. As close as I can tell they are designed to get a good crash test rating. It is the new "rear crash" rating that they improved on with the new headrest. Toyota fared poorly in the rear crash test results. I would imagine they will follow Honda with some change to the headrest.

They are not "headrests". They are not a place to rest your head while driving. They are head restraints, designed and incorporated in the vehicle to prevent the driver's head and neck from sustaining whiplash injury in case of a rear impact accident.

The position of the head restraints can be brought slightly rearward by tilting the seatback a bit.

The complaints started in December last year. More than just one person. Starts about here:

These forums attract people with problems. People just seem to love it when someone shares their misery.

And, I'm sure a lot of people don't have a problem until they read about it in these forums.

Then they go chack their own cars and, sure enough, what they didn't notice before suddenly becomes a problem.

I have yet to have a customer complain nor have I heard this from any other salesperson.

I'm sure, however that someone from Honda Corporate reads these threads and if the hear something enough they will probably make changes.

I love them ... what they stand for ... safety/style/environment/COMFORT ... wait ??? !!!!! .... until I drove it home[ 20 miles ] and could not get comfortable ... something was pushing on my head ... I am 6'2". How EXTREMELY dissapointing ... if any honda guy reads this .. EMAIL me .. I woke up with pain between my shoulder blades ... the Head Rest/Rest is a design DEFECT ... this thing has to be adjustable ... arghhh .. I am beyond dissappointed/mad .. my whole family was looking forward to this ... don't tell me I am a griper ... all I ever have done is tell people how good my HONDAs are ... this is WRONG/BOGUS/BAD !! HONDA fix it FAST !!! The HEAD REST is UNCOMFORTABLE and causes the muscles in your neck to have a constant dull pressure on them if you lean back and try and REST !!! I bought this Saturday ... I am returning it tomorrow. p.s. I agree on the HandBrake ... bad design but I wouldn't mind that ... I could put something on it. ARGGggHHH ... I am heartbroken ... I see this forum has been quiet for awhile, but hopefully a few people are still keeping their eyes on it. My '98 Civic Hatchback (only 83,750 miles) was totalled last week, and now I have to decide how to replace it.

All in all, it's looking like another Civic again, but I took a hybrid and a coupe on test drive the other day, and I didn't have a 'love it' reaction to either.

Actually, I hated the head restraint on the coupe, which I'm told is standard on all Civics except the HCT -- that's pretty much dealbreaker for me, except nothing else in my price range is exciting me very much.

I'm mostly drawn to the Hybrid (today), but the only one my small town dealership had didn't drive very smoothly. Hard to describe: there was kind of a mechanical bumping feeling, even on smooth streets. Does this ring any bells with anyone? I'm hoping it was that particular car...

HCH Brakes Issue? by a2guy

Hi - I test drove a 2007 HCH today, and I was very impressed. The fit and finish of the car was great, the acceleration was decent, and I loved the gauges and seats. The only issue I had were the brakes. There was almost no travel to them whatsoever. They didn't really "give" when I pressed them, or brake the car right away. I had to press really hard, and then they would only move a little bit and apply the brakes rather abruptly. Is this something common to all HCHs, or was my test drive model acting weird? It it something that gets better with use? If I end up deciding to buy one, I'll probably try test driving a different HCH to see if there's any difference.

I've owned my Civic Hybrid for 5 months now and I haven't noticed anything strange about the brakes. It must have been the car you test drove.

I was really, really leaning towards buying the Honda Civic Hybrid- until I test drove it twice. While the acceleration is adequate, I found the road noise to be extremely unacceptable - it was explained to me that Honda had to remove some insulation under the car to achieve the gas mileage they claim. Second, the smaller tire size leads to a less comfortable ride and the car seemed to jump all over the road when driving on the Interstate at 70 MPH- a normal speed for the death alley speedway I live near.

I drove the regular Civic EX in comparison and bought it the next week- a much nicer car for $4000 less and I'm getting 38 MPG. Hybrids have to improve before I buy one.
