So, what is the deal with the Lexus? "The car that started the cross over craze." Really?
 
I was under the impression that the Subaru Outback was the first cross over, though it was a bit more subtle in its approach than that Lexus. Honestly, I should have given it the nod for 1996, though it had skipped my mind!
 
Maybe Karl can chime in on this one, because I am a little befuddled by that statement regarding the Lexus. Perhaps more aptly put would have been to add "in the luxury market," though it does qualify it a little by using the phrase "midsize SUV market."

Is an Outback really a crossover, or just a jacked up wagon? I've always considered it the latter...

Yeah I wouldn't call it a crossover.
 
The RX was the first vehicle that showed a luxury crossover could be profitable. Previous crossovers, RAV-4 and CR-V, were not luxrious.

I think the RX was MotorTrend's car/truck of the year for 1997 too.

How can the '99 RX be significant, when the winner for 1998 was the Mercedes ML, which supposedly started the luxury SUV craze?
 
Geez... One of them could be significant, but not both..

I think because the RX is a Camry SUV, and the ML is traditional SUV. They are really graspin at straws, or those years were meaningless.

Yeah the ML back in 1998 was a completly traditional SUV with body on frame chassis and low range. The early versions of that design weren't so great but the later ones were actually pretty good.
 
The new one is junk though.

...the AMC Eagle could be considered a cross-over so the idea is older then the Lexus or Subaru.

I think the Eagle was a jacked up wagon too...not a SUV on a car platform. It was the real predecessor to the Outback.

I know it's jumping ahead, but I think 2002 would have to be the redesigned Nissan Altima... It put Nissan back on the map in competing with Honda & Toyota. Everywhere you looked was a new Altima. The 2.5L could crank out 180hp, which is impressive for a 4 cylinder; and the 3.5L V6 put out at least 220, if I remember correctly...
