So, what is the deal with the Lexus? "The car that started the cross over craze." Really? I was under the impression that the Subaru Outback was the first cross over, though it was a bit more subtle in its approach than that Lexus. Honestly, I should have given it the nod for 1996, though it had skipped my mind! Maybe Karl can chime in on this one, because I am a little befuddled by that statement regarding the Lexus. Perhaps more aptly put would have been to add "in the luxury market," though it does qualify it a little by using the phrase "midsize SUV market."

...the AMC Eagle could be considered a cross-over so the idea is older then the Lexus or Subaru.

I know it's jumping ahead, but I think 2002 would have to be the redesigned Nissan Altima... It put Nissan back on the map in competing with Honda & Toyota. Everywhere you looked was a new Altima. The 2.5L could crank out 180hp, which is impressive for a 4 cylinder; and the 3.5L V6 put out at least 220, if I remember correctly...
