Oh, and fintail, will you please explain your rationale behind the Navigator, of all worthless hunks of metal?

Remember, one man's worthless hunk of metal is another man's large family transporting, minivan-substituting, masculine image-preserving vehicle.

Wasn't the 1997 Model Corvette the C5 and the current generation corvette the C6?

Yep you are right

So the E gets it...surprising in a way. Styling wise it did set some trends I guess, but it was a far from perfect car. More significant than a Vette anyway, although it did look like a car of the future compared to what it replaced.

So...1998...New Beetle?

Thought so.

Yeah 1998 has to be the new beatle. It started off the whole retro trend and kind of kicked VW up out of the dolldrums they had been in.

Hahahahahah.... too true! If anything though, the most significant thing about the large "luxury SUVs" was perhaps the manufacturers coming out of the closet and straight up dropping the "utility." It was saying, "Hey, these things are all about creature comforts and image."

Must have had C6 on the brain (that's the one we've been writing about for the last two years). Text will be updated to "C5" shortly.

Let me know when you need another fact checker. I keep my brain indexed alphabetically by year for automotive information.

2000 and 2001? by festiboi1

My guess would be the Ford Focus for 2000. It broke the standard norm for economy cars with lots of room, Euro-style, and superb handling. It proved that cheap cars don't have to be boring and lack personality.

For 2001 it has to be the PT Cruiser. The car didn't fit in any one catergory and broke the mold. The VW Beetle may have started the retro craze, yet the Cruiser added in versatility, room, and a unique American look. After all these years, it still holds its own with the competition and has been copied since.

1999's pick jogged my memory. by xwesx

So, what is the deal with the Lexus? "The car that started the cross over craze." Really?

I was under the impression that the Subaru Outback was the first cross over, though it was a bit more subtle in its approach than that Lexus. Honestly, I should have given it the nod for 1996, though it had skipped my mind!

Maybe Karl can chime in on this one, because I am a little befuddled by that statement regarding the Lexus. Perhaps more aptly put would have been to add "in the luxury market," though it does qualify it a little by using the phrase "midsize SUV market."

Is an Outback really a crossover, or just a jacked up wagon? I've always considered it the latter...
