... I don't know... I don't see them as significant, at all...

I would have pegged the Camry for 1992... That was the first year that they were all grown up..

The Intrepid would be good for '93.. that was the first decent car that Chrysler had made since... well.. since...

a long, long time...

While the Viper and RX-7... by andre1969

are cool cars, IMO they're just too nichey to really be considered truly significant. They only build a handful of Vipers a year while the RX-7 was just another example of the once lithe, nimble, affordable Japanese sporty coupe suddenly becoming something that wants to eat Corvettes for breakfast, and ultimately doomed to the same fate as the Supra, 300ZX, and Prelude.

I think in fairness to the Viper, it was the car that started the whole "fast lane from wild concept to actual production" thing (as the writeup highlights).

Cars like the PT Cruiser, the T-bird, the HHR, the GT, the upcoming Camaro, etc. all in some measure owe their existence as they are to the Viper.

For 1993 I would've picked the Dodge Intrepid or Chrysler Concorde.

I agree. While the RX-7 was a nice sports type car with light weight, lots of power, etc., it had a lot of problems as I recall. That car model did not have any sucess at all in the marketplace, did not inspire imitators, nor did it last long. It was discontinued. What kind of signficance was that? Intrepid and Concorde with cab-forward design, great interior room, good visibility, nice styling and so forth was a heck of a lot more significant than the Mazda. There were imitators within a couple/few years. Think that we should ask the Edmunds folks to state/restate what is their criteria for the term "most significant". Seems like some of their picks are highly arbitrary with scant justification.

I was correct with the Viper choice. I had stated some time ago that 1994 is the year of the Dodge Ram. It vaulted Dodges truck sales from a measly single didgit of the market share to over 20 percent in 1999. I'd say that that was a significant impact.

From the beginning, sports and muscle cars seemed to receive the nod more often than not, and looks like '92 and '93 are following this rule.

I agree with the W126, which on the worldwide stage was certainly more important than the 1981 Escort (Escort was an existing model everywhere but NA - not really new).

Audi design was pretty significant too.

i got the trucks for 94. I have no clue for 1996. in fact i cannot think of much through the late 90's cept for SUV's but they were all chasing the trend. The full size Ford Bronco left us in 1996 (I had an 80 and loved it and an 86 and hated it). I dont know when the H1 went up for sale to the public, that could be in there. The late 90's were full of oversize SUVs but nothing really sticks out. I think the BMW Z3 came out in that era. Got any other ideas?

The only new model I can come up with for '96 was the Audi A4..

That might be significant, as it was a big step forward for Audi... and they are still selling the same basic car today.. but, in the big picture, not so much...

'96 was also the first year for the uni-body Pathfinder... the first one that wasn't based on the Nissan pickup..

Shewww... I'm really reaching...
