Oh, that's easy for 1991 - the Explorer is a shoe-in, the sad portent of SUV-o-mania, and of course, the "Exploder" phenomenon that mortally wounded Ford in 2000.

And I've finally made up my mind, agreeing with the rest of you that the Lexus LS is more significant than the Miata for 1990.

Now for 1992, does anyone think the Camry will get it again, since that generation was considered the "gold standard" by so many? OTOH, it didn't become the best-selling car until the generation after this one.

Ah the Exploder, how senile of me. 1991 is done.

So on to 92....big newbies were Camry, BMW 3er, MB W140, Lexus ES, Seville and Eldo, Prelude, Suburban and friends...and I am sure some others

Dodge Viper? by skierx420

I am suprised that no one has considered the Dodge Viper. The Viper is the reason Dodge was able to change its whole direction from the K car era to what we think of now as powerful cars with high horsepower. I understand that there used to be that image from the 60's and the 70's but the Viper reignited the passion for some. Not to mention it was the first domestic competitor to the Corvette in years, and better for a while.

After driving a regular R500 I don't think anyone, not even AMG, could make that into a pleasent driving experience.

Except that one-hit wonders don't change the public anymore.

We've grown smarter and more savvy, thanks, I think, to the InterNet. The old 60-something executives can't imagine a world where their marketing tricks that used to work now suddenly don't.

As for 1990 - no clue.

1990 should have definately gone to the Lexus LS400. That was a ridiculously significant car in the automotive world that year, as it caused other luxury makers to rethink how they made & sold luxury cars. It caused Mercedes to become less stubborn, to cut costs and prices. As well as the Lexus LS400 caused other luxury carmakers to to wake up also. Such as after the LS400, Cadillac finally started to get serious about building a world class Seville(even though it took them still another half decade to build one). Also, since 1990 the luxury car market has literally exploded! I doubt the luxury market would be this big without Lexus, since Mercedes would probably still have a stick up it's you know what.

Good choice by plekto

The Miata was always on my personal list - but dang - it's been 16 years???

What is noteable about it is that it was very close to the original in many ways. Light, to the point, and without the bloat. Just a simple little roadster and exactly what people wanted. Still sells amazingly well today.

Agreed...there couldn't have been a better choice for 1990.

Additionally, what's always struck me about the Miata is that after a good 2 decades of affordable enthusiast cars being primarily about statistical performance, the Miata broke with that and went back to the '50s - '60s sports car mentality of "immediacy"...being connected to the driving experience as being more important than how fast you got to 60mph. And even in power-hungry America, they sold well.

They're slower than your average family sedan. But unlike a family sedan, they make even a trip to the grocery store feel like an adventure.

...I thought the Lexus LS400 would've been a shoo-in for either 1989 or 1990. I'd have waited for 1991 for the Miata.

It was then or never for the Miata. 1991 was claimed by Explorer from the word 'go.' I guess 'significant' can take different routes, but "LS400" is a badge I hear infrequently, if at all. "Miata," on the other hand.....
