Not trying to be a tool, but its a mistake you keep repeating.... the Five Hundred's Mecury counterpart is the Montego, not the Monterrey (thats the awful excuse for a minivan that Ford sells under the Mercury name).

I know this isn't a minivan forum, but my wife drove a Monterey for over a year and loved it. No problems, trouble-free ownership. We compared it to our friends' vehicles; a Chrysler Town and Country and an Odyssey, even they said the Monterey was a great van. Problem was they never heard of it. Well, if you've never heard of it, how can it make your consideration list?

Mercury didn't do enough to educate consumers about it. When did you ever see a Monterey commercial? I don't think I ever saw one.

Mercury didn't really do much advertising period until a couple of years ago for any vehicles really. At least I don't recall any. When my wife and I started researching and shopping for an SUV in late 2003 we would have never known or thought about a Mountaineer. We had been looking for about 4 months. Test drove Envoys, Trailblazer, Pilot 3 times, Highlander, Pathfinder, Explorers at least 3 times, Endeavor a couple of times. We were at a Ford Dealer driving an Eddie Bauer 4wd with a V-8, but the price was about $40K. We happened to notice a Lincoln/Mercury dealer on the way home and thought we would stop in to see if Mercury had any kind of Suv's. Saw and test drove a Mountaineer AWD V-8 in the luxury trim. I never even really heard about the vehicle before this. Loaded with the same options as the Eddie Bauer, but was actually less $. Went back and forth between the Pilot and the Mountaineer. Bought the Mountaineer in March of '04 and have never looked back. The Pilot reminded us too much of the third Mini Van in 18 years that we were replacing.

It is more tempting than ever with the standard side curtain airbags, ABS and AUX audio input jack and available nav system. The fold flat front passenger seat is a plus for cargo carrying also. You may be able to fit some odd shaped bulky items into the cabin that may have otherwise required at least a station wagon or small SUV.
However, the crash test results were poor. Weren't the crash test results not anywhere near the best in the class even with the then optional side curtain airbags?
The only other major concern is not being able to manually downshift and hold the next lower gear on extended uphill grades due to only having D and L as gear selections. Someone posted the gear selector only has D and L because the car was supposed ot have a CVT that was pulled from production, but Ford did not bother to get a new gear selector to match the new transmission.
The odd turn signal may be another annoyance.

I am confused now. I thought ABS was NOT standard on the '07 Fusion, but is standard on the '07 Milan.

Also I don't think the Fusion has been crash tested yet with the side airbags--has it?

With regard to ABS, that is what I thought I read too...you can check for yourself here.

On the crash test, it is not shown with side air bags at iihs.com.

Not in the side. The Fusion did score poorly on the IIHS side test without side bags and curtains which is no different from any other car in its class without the bags/curtains. However most now have those bags and curtains standard and so will the Fusion in a couple of months as mentioned.

Weren't the front tests not that great on one of either the government or insurance institute tests? The side air bags cannot change that.
