CRD mileage by biojeep

Not to add fuel to the fire, so to speak, but 42 mpg might be possible, but we'd have to know how the Jeep is set up and how it is driven.

We have more than 20,000 miles on our 2005 Liberty. I drive 70-75 mph on interstates. We've made several long trips lately -- two adults with luggage -- and tend to stay in the 28-29 mpg range. The longer the trip, the better the mileage. Conversely, running around town drops us into the 18 mpg range. In between is, well, in between.

The best mileage we've seen was 32 over a 700-mile stretch of I-5 ... and that was on B99 Biodiesel, which is supposed to cost a roughly 5% mileage loss. I regularly run B99 and the Jeep loves it.

Temperatures drop into the low 20's where we live, but still the Jeep starts right up. Perhaps the secret is that we're not running homemade crap filled with chunks of yesterday's greasy diner leavings.

We buy from Seattle BioDiesel, a reputable manufacturer. Based on our experience, they make good stuff. I've taken to hauling 5-gallon plastic containers on trips, so I have some BioD to mix in with the Dino. Even using the cheap Wally Mart gas cans, BioD does stink. And no, it's not dangerous, as hauling gasoline would be. After all, it's mostly canola oil.

I'm a sports car guy, not a fuel mileage nut, so didn't even think to pump up our tires a bit until reading this forum today. We're still running the 31-32 psi that the dealer puts in when we drop over there.

Pumping up the tires and sticking to a 50-55 mph speed may well put the Liberty into a much higher fuel mileage range. Maybe we ought to ask more questions before we jump on a fellow Jeepster about his mileage claims.

biojeep: You make some great points. Our CRD does not shift into 5th until 53-54 and lock up 54-59 depending on how much foot is on the peddle. With bi-20 our CRD ran rough. On b-5 it's great.

If your CRD ran rough on BioD it's most likely the quality of the fuel. Not all biodiesel is created equal ... and that's the problem. Until what is available is of uniformly high quality, we will get mixed results.

The only way you can tell my Jeep runs on B99 are:
1. Exhaust smells different, though not like any french fries you'd want to eat (vague vegetable oil smell);
2. The engine is quieter because BioD has better lubricity than dino; and
3. There's no exhaust cloud when you accelerate.

biojeep: The quality and consistency are very serious issues and because of these problems DCX has said if they can prove you have more than b-5 your warranty is void. DCX has taken a rather tuff stand, how they can tell is a big question I don't have any idea. You are right that it could very well be I got some bad fuel or the bad bio part. I just know I won't do it again.
I do not have an exhaust cloud when we accelerate, and starting on these cold below 15 F with no cloud either, just a typical heat cloud which is very little.

"We're still running the 31-32 psi that the dealer puts in when we drop over there. "

When I picked up my new Liberty from the dealer, the tires had about 15-20 psi.

Remember Ronald Regan who, when dealing with the Soviets, said that we should trust them to do what they say they will do, but we will verify that they have done it.

In that same vein, I would check the torque of the lug nuts on the wheels also.

Torque Converter Recall by littlesmokey

Hello,

I just had the above recall done and am wondering if anyone knows just how much torque they took away when they reprogrammed the ECM. I tow a trailer that is 4500# and don't want to feel like I'm driving a Chevette. I can't tow the trailer now as it is snowed in.

Thanks.

littlesmoky: The difference in torque is noticeable. I did not tow a trailer, but on a uphill freeway I take to go the get up and go is evident. If I notice it, I would think you will too. However the fuel mileage seems somewhat improved by perhaps 2 mpg.
I was really stunned as around town I did not think there was any difference. I am not going to be amazed if DCX has to re-flash these computers because I think there will be sore complaints for sure.

What am I getting into??? by stubak

I am seriously considering a 2006 Liberty CRD to replace my 02 Subaru Outback which has near 80K on the odometer and has never had to go in the shop for anything other than brake pads.
I read your forum to discover the CRD has EGR issues and now thanks to the Feds, has been discontinued. The vehicle I am considering has 15 K on the odometer.

Would it be a hopeless dream to expect 32 MPG on the hiway if driven reasonably? (My Subaru does that) What about parts availability and overall reliability/durability of this vehicle.

I am well familiar with diesels having owned several including a Golf TDI which regularly got me 52 MPG.

How would you rate the tranny and it's life expectancy? I hate automatics but thats all I can find in a CRD.

Hope to hear from you soon. stubak911aol.com

When my girlfriend and I drive, it is not what we drive but who gets to drive the CRD. It sits up at a nice level, drives very good and tows like a dream. A 4x4 compared to a Golf is quite a change. The Jeep won't be as comfortable as a car on long trips. It is slower, eats up more diesel, and will have a somewhat larger maintenance cost(oil, gearbox lubes, filters, etc). By reading some of the other posts the EGR problem can be alleviated by a few easy steps for example using ultra low sulfer and re venting or filtering the CCV hose. Suggest to ask about an extended warranty, keeps me sleeping good at night. Mine gets close to 22 mpg using the fill up method. I have used it to tow, and get close to 19 mpg. I am Ecstatic with what I get compared to what I had before. More hiway miles and I would expect a higher MPG. The Transmission is a very nice addition to the CRD as keeps the RPM's low, and makes the long trips fun with cruise control. All the CRD'ers either love or hate the Jeep. Take it for a good spin and if you don't want to let it go then consider it. You won't hear about all the good ones out on the Road that people drive on the computer.

Ucanfarm,
Comfort of a long trip cannot be predicted. I recently drove 800 miles in one day. It was raining heavily in the morning, heavy traffic in the Paris area, some slippery roads and a fairly long stretch at 80 mph with cruise control. Our CRD beats most sedans because of it's passenger room and regularity of the engine. A steady 2600 rpm and good company erases fatigue when driving this jewel.
