Update on uncontrolled Azera Acceleration posting by richlieb

Well... It appears I should apologize to Hyundai... and I will.

It turns out it was the Winter floormat.. but found it after 4 events the same day and after the dealer went thru the car with a fine tooth comb...

I purchased Weathertech Winter Mat's... Nice and Heavy Rubber Mat's..
Turns out that the Azera's accelerator peddle is canterlevered and the bottom of the peddle comes within maybe 3/8" to the floor under Hard acceleration..
Well if the Mat moves just a little... The peddle rides over the edge of the Mat and can't return !! It stays floored !!
Hyundai may want to think about slightly more clearence... However I will be modifiying the Mat this weekend to use the Normal Mat anchors ..

Thanks for the comments and feedback..

I had a simular occurence this winter, reminiscent of my 1990 Volvo that had a rare sticking throttle in cold weather. As you did, I second guessed the incident as a floormat since it was at night, so I couldn't SEE what happened down there, and expected that my frantic scampering of feet to pedals cleared the problem.
Well, it happened again yesterday. I accelerated briskly to merge with traffic. I let off the pedal but it felt as if it stayed down. The car kept "blasting off." In the haste of my approach to a red traffic light, I danced around on the pedals and geared to neutral.
This is a major and dangerous issue I hope nobody else has to experience. I remember years ago that Volvo had a recall on cars doing this. I vaguely recollect what incident prompted the recall but I think an accident was on the news due to a Volvo flying across a parking lot due to a stuck gas pedal.
I'll be going in to have the car checked this weekend.

Yes, floor mats have been blamed for unintended acceleration in many cars. Recently there was a recall for Lexus about the floor mats where the drivers wouldn't secure the floormats & they would get stuck under the brake pedal preventing the drivers from stopping. Better make sure that the mats are secured.

I'm curious as to which Weather Tech mats did you buy. I bought a set directly from WeatherTech's site. The ones I have are cut to fit Azera. It doesn't get under the pedals & there isn't much chance of them getting stuck there. Did you happen to buy WeatherTech's generic mats? I would advice you to get vehicle-specific ones.

Another suggestion I would give is to raise the Pedals if you have the Power Pedals (comes with Limited Ultimate package). Raise the pedals so that they're a little more above the floor.

Azera 2007 concerns by rmcbain

We purchased a 2007 Azera in Oct. 07 and have experienced a few minor problems. The right drivers light burnt out after only 200 miles but the dealer mailed us a new bulb and we had it replaced by our local dealer.
Just last week while driving the windshield developed a stress crack on the passenger side lower area below wiper arm. We took it to the local dealer and they are attempting to have a warranty issue resolved on this.
Yesterday while washing the car which we never let get dirty we found small cracks on both rear quarter panels where the rear doors meet the panel. Has any one seen or heard of this problem.
Thanks

Sounds like that car had been through something before it even got to the dealer. Stress cracks on the windshield and cracked fenders!!! Are the fender cracks only in the paint or is the crack all the way through the sheet metal?

Personally, I haven't heard of these problems at all.

The car has been carefuly driven and only on dry pavement. The stress crack in the windshield appeared when we went to drive the car one morning. It has grown to cover the entire passenger viewing area.
Regarding the cracks in the fenders at the lower portion of the rear doors it is in the clear plastic coating they have installed at the factory. It appears that the curve was too tight and caused the plastic to crack. No biggie as weare going to have them remved and intall a different type of clear protection in that area.

I wasn't implying that YOU had done anything to the car...go back and read, I said it sounded like the car had been through something before it got to the dealer...like maybe on the transport or something or it could have just been a defective windshield to begin with. At any rate...should be taken care of by the warranty with no issues at all.

There's a clear plastic coating???

Dear Allmett33: I think you misunderstod as I was not implying that we had done anyting to the car. It is a simple windshield stress crackwhich I have seen on a few Santa Fe's as well. The plastic is a protective four inch piece at the lower portion of the rear door on the fender which is probably there to protect from road debris in the winter. Hope this clears it up.

I think the message is getting lost in translation. I never indicated that I thought you had done anything to the car. My original posting in response to yours was just a simple statement that something could have happened to the car before it even got to the dealer where you bought it from...then after the reply, I thought about the fact that it simply could have been a defective windshield.

Far be it for me to think that someone would spend anywhere between $25-30K for a car and go out and mess it up like that. I would never think that.

As far as the plastic coating, I know some cars have it and I'm sitting here actually trying to remember if my Azera has it or not. I have to wait till I get home to check to be sure. However, if I can't recall and it is there...must be a good thing that I don't see it, right?

I've heard of the 3M clear coating that is out now. Some folks have done it with success, some have not been so happy with it. All I can say is good luck with it.

I purchased a 2007 Azera Limited Nov. 2007. I also experienced two incidents of uncontrolled acceleration as you described, also thinking it was the floor mat. The first time it did seem as if the accelerator was stuck on the floor mat (I bought an all weather type floor mat). Like you I shifted into neutral, but will try the braking instead should this happen again. I believe I read or the salesman told me that if the Azera reaches too many RPMs, the engine (or something) will cut out so as not to damage the engine. Not sure if that is true, though. Keep us posted if you follow up with service on this or have more problems. What a fast car!
