I've been meaning to post my experience with an "04 CTS 3.6l- so here goes
Bough 2.5yrs ago as a certified used car from Cad. dealer in Milwaukee. I'm an engineer (exactly the demographic Cadillac are trying to market to - 35yrs old). It was a leap of faith buying a Cadillac but I thought I'd try it - the CTS looks great- mine is black with a regular base leather interior.
Here what has been done to it: (out of necessity- it recently hit 100k- so warranty expired)
2 Rear ends (complete diff ass'y)- Note last one was put in in Oct last year (when car was serviced recently dealer told me the oil from ass'y was black on one side of diff- so new fluid etc. put in). The car got stuck in grass at side of my driveway during bad snow in Wi in Dec - 2 min.s of trying to get it out- has almost killed the diff. clutch (nothing heroic- gently tried to one wheel onto tarmac) - I understand CTS's have an appetite for diff.s - either a design or Mexico AMM manufacturing problem- but this is a big ticket item.
1 Half shaft - drive to axle from diff.
1 new seal- wheel hub (radial shaft seal)
New engine chains & sprockets - complete timing chain replacement
Water pump gasket-#1 Coolant leak #1 (Dealer told me it was the gasket - took it to another dealer closer to home because 100k warranty was looming
Water Pump gasket#2 - Coolant leak#2 (I've worked in auto. selaing industry for large German company- know that seals/probabilities don't go bad twice in a relatively short space of time) - took it to a Chevy dealer closer to home- turns out the gasket was fine- the cylinder head was leaking
1 cylinder head job gasket and water pump- see above
AC - two trips to delaer to fix bad gaskets
3 struts in front end ( one set only lasted a year)
2 radios (stopped working)
Leak in trunk
Leak in floor well - driver's side - 2 trips to resolve
Broken Vent switch, loose trim, peeling paint m ball joints, starting disabled because of sftware issue , bushings.....................etc
this is just what I can remember- there is no room in glove box for the encylopedia of invoices generated by dealer to fix problems- and I have no idea what was done to it by prior owner. (note each line item represents trip to dealer.
At 103k - the transmission / radiator closed loop cooling failer - send trans. fluid to red. and coolant to trans. - cost $4300 to fix. When car was picked up at dealer a few weeks ago- I'm told it developed a brake assist problem right there in the servicing bay and needs a new sensor- and the thermostat is lazy- all happened at dealer.
I had the car serviced at a Cadillac dealer religuously ( being an engineer I can appreciate maintenance) and also paid the $500 shoe and rotor regrind without complaint when the economy was in the toliet and the dealer was obviously balancing the books.
GM- with a serious push put 25% toward parts in the transmission fiasco- and more or less stated you are on your own- which is a major disappointment to say the least. I believe the official line was - " there are too many miles on the car and it's an 2004" - all of which is true- but the car was 3k over it's warranty (with what is a design fault), with a meticulously maintained car..............
GM have a lot of catching up to do quality wise.... I've driven the new CTS - and on the surface like it's earlier sibling- everything looks in order- but I can't take the risk again with this brand.
I don't believe in Lemons - systems failure happen because of just that- but all these items I've dealt with are isolated systems- which means exceptionally poor quality.- plain and simple I'm afraid.

09 CTS with all options except AWD and the DI engine...purchased Sept08 with over 25K on it so far and not one complaint...best riding and driving car I have owned....
noting your Diff problems...the earlier MY CTS were notorious for the rear Diff failures....and they were a german manfacture was my understanding...(Getrag)...these were the same difs put in the early MY 06-07 Pontiac Solstices which suffered the same fate...leaks and clutch packs destroying themselves...it appeared it was a design issue...........Solstice was replaced twice as well with the last one a year ago solving the grinding sounds and leak issues...
the new CTS IMHO is far above the earlier MY ones......I would highly recommend it

Have had my 08 cts in the shop on and off for 5 weeks and have ownd it for 6 months ant it still has a list of problems . GM is now saying that some of the problems are common for this car. Rough idle, can barly get 19 mpg on flat hwy. chugging at slow rolling speeds (Have It in writing). I thought this was a cadillac GMs flagship luxury division Do not buy a 3.6 FI 2008 . I have only heard good things about the DI cars. My FI car has only 34000 miles and runs like it has 300000 miles

is GM telling you these things are normal or is the dealership doing it....if so...would change dealers immediately.....and look for a regional GM tech rep to review your issues...none of the issues you mention should be considered normal....

this really irritates me..."some of the problems are common"...does this mean that they will never be able to solve them, so don't worry about it?....i own a 06 3.6 V6 CTS and i have the same problems...one would think over two years there would be some improvement.

my reciept says service manager and GM rep inspected timing componets. Replaced them. then says remainer of surge at Idle is normal per GM. Its not the service manager he admits its not rite. GM had the car sit for three week while they made up their mind. I'll drop the car off anywhere to let a GM rep drive for a couple days. I dont think they understand what it is doing,
#57 of 64 2005 CTS Engine failure
Apr 27, 2012 (11:41 am)
My 2005 CTS with 62000 miles needs a new engine,IT somehow ran itself out of oil without a single warning, its a shame that a car would let you know if your wheels are spinning (traction control)or sliding (stabiltrac)or you trunk or door is open but no lights for low oil level.I have no Idea where the oil went I called GM and got a case #71-1049338571 and gave permission for an engine diagnosis the service dept said that it would cost $1200 for the engine breakdown to find out what caused the problem. They took the oil pan off and saw a broken connecting rod,two holes in the block and a piston slammed into the cylinder wall the GM district person came and the decision was made that it was due to lack of lubrication.New engine replacement cost is $6200 of which GM said they would pay %20 or give me $2000 toward the payoff of my vehicle or towards the purchase of a new car,to which both I declined upon researching on the internet I found that I am not alone with this problem with the 3.6l engine the NHTSA has a bulletin item#10036464 that speaks about a PCV Baffle concern,GM has a TSB#01-06-01011e so they know about the problem but are willfully refusing to acknowledge a defective engine ,The GM 3.6l vvt should not drink oil at a tune of 1 quart every 750 miles this is my 4th caddy and my last.I will do everything that I can to make this problem known GM ought to be ashamed about the way they treat their loyal customers.

I have a 2005 CTS. They tell me it's normal for them to use more oil than other cars. RIGHT??? I have to check it all of the time. I can usually tell it is getting low the way it shifts itself. I have to add a quart about every 4-6 weeks it seems like. I have Onstar which I get updates each month to tell me the oil % is getting down to a low amount. The car also tells me when the % of oil is low but you have to check that out with the radio dials. I always check there and if the oil % is at 10-15% I get an oil change. I agree with you that I would NEVER by another CTS. I am disappointed in the longevity of this car. Iike the looks and size but the price is not worth it. Good luck with car....
