It is obvious that Mazda pushed the CX-7 onto the market to gain a buzz prior to the CX-9. Loved the look, fit, and finish of the CX-7. Driving it was a different story; weak engine, felt every crack in the road, and had no sense of where the edges of the vehicle was when trying to park. This does not include the obvious problems of weak A/C and premium fuel. Maybe a small CX-9 was a bad idea.

Weak engine or weak driver? There isnt anything weak about the CX-7 engine...unless the turbo isnt working.

imo, the cx7 is a very nice looking suv, inside and out. but the engine seems to be its achilles heel. i know some people are protective of their new car, but honestly, if you take a step back, the premium requiring turbo 4 with low mpg was a dumb idea.

hopefully mazda will put a good v6 in there, in a year or two.

I have been following the messages on this vehicle for a while and it seems to me that there are several people that must have driven them with regular gas in the tank. When they were first showing up at dealerships some put regular fuel in them. This totally retards the engine and would make people feel it is under powered.

I would think that this is where the large discrepancy is between the lots of power and no power reviews come from.

I second audi8q's opinion. The CX7 has gobs of horsepower - there is no need for a V6. Stick in a V6 and you'll make the CX-7 even heavier and most likely, only marginal increase in horsepower and torque. Remember the specs? 244 hp 5000 rpm AND 258 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm? Not bad for a 4 cylinder!

The acceleration is brisk and in my experience, I've out-gunned other vehicles that supposedly have better performance. In my mind, the CX-7 is a "SUV LITE", which isn't a bad thing. The only disadvantage that I can think of, is that the CX7 isn't equipped to carry heavy loads nor tow large trailers. If you want towing and hauling, you'll have to find another SUV with more HP and torque.

The CX7 was never meant to be an off-road vehicle, either. It's a street machine, designed to be very flexible in functionality, with enough "bling-bling" to satisfy my ego.

If it makes you any more receptive to the premium fuel/turbo/CUV idea, Acura has done the exact same thing with their RDX, and the mileage numbers the press are getting are well below the EPA predictions as well. If it's really misery, then it's good company to have...

maybe not a weak engine by taz6

but to me it felt like a four cylinder engine and not a four cylinder turbo. Perhaps I was more impressed with the mazda 6 station wagon that I drove before your lovely CX-7. If you want to wait for the CX-9 it will come with a 6 cylinder I hope.

We are searching for a new vehicle for my wife. We really like the style and functionality of the CX-7. It drove great, terrific handling. Only one MAJOR down fall. The engine! It requires premium fuel, gets mediocre mileage and is weak. Yes, once the turbo kicks in it goes pretty good but when I am setting still and want to go I want to go now. I don't want to have to creep out of the stop and have the engine decide to catch up. They would have been much better served with a 6 cylinder. We wont be getting a CX-7 the toyota RAV4 while not as stylish, has a great engine, gets good mileage and handles well.

UTTER UTTER UTTER BS. I'm a car enthusiast and calls it like I see it. This car flies. Very little turbo lag. While one can argue whether a competitor is a 1/10 second quicker, in no way can anyone who knows anything about cars say this has a "weak" engine. You will not find a single professional review from a credible source make this statement, not one. (Make sure the tester was filled with premium for gods sake, regular will kill the performance of any turbo).
