Disappointed by fitchick

I'm a 27 yo female, married, with a 6 year old daughter. I gave up my 2000 Civic that was an amazingly funderful car. I fell in love with the Fit, and with my So.California commute, I figured it would help out with fuel economy. Boy, was I disappointed! I typically get 24-26 MPG, mostly driving 40-70 MPH on the freeways. I have never had a tank get me over 300 miles (the fuel light comes on at 220, usually) I have had it serviced regularly, and I have 9500 miles on it. When I ask the dealer about it, they said that I "drove it too hard" in the first-1000 mile "breaking in" period. I was always driving it carefully, so that is hard to believe. I have also been going crazy with the ABS...whenever I go slowly over railroad tracks or a speed bump, the ABS starts thumping like a jackhammer. Also, the plastic wheel well around the tires has a big hole melted through it (that happened within my first week)

I do love the stereo, cruise, fog lights, and the look of the car. But if I would have know that I'd get worse gas mileage than my Civic, I would have never given it up.

If you would have checked the EPA estimates for the Civic and Fit before you bought the Fit, you would have seen that the Fit is not rated any higher than the Civic for MPG. But you do have more interior cargo space with the Fit.

I'm a 28 year old female, married, no kids. This is my first brand new car.

I have a 43 mile commute each way to work. Fuel economy is important to me, for both my wallet and the environment. In the past I've owned a Hyundai Excel, 1997 Saturn SL2 and 2001 Toyota Echo (still have the Echo). We've always liked small cars, but found that we needed something with more cargo space - got sick of having to rent a van or pickup every time we needed to carry something larger than a television. The Magic Seats were a big selling point for us.

The Fit seemed perfect to us....tons of cargo space, easy to load, great fuel economy, fun to drive. Plus it's nice to have power windows and locks again, and 4 doors. It has everything I need to be comfortable without a bunch of extras that I don't want. I've only had it for 2 days now, but I love it - look forward to driving it every chance I get!

Age: 32
Married, 3 kids (1 step-daughter not living with us)
Traded in my 2006 Civic LX auto (Atomic Blue) for 2008 Honda Fit Sport manual (Milano Red), I couldn't carry anything in the Civic - it is a great car, but when I had to dismantle my bike to make it fit, I knew I had a problem. Plus, I missed the stick shift. I mainly was looking for the utility features of the Fit, not to mention, this car is so fun to drive. Although - I have been getting the, "Why did you buy a girl car?" Whatever, jealousy is a terrible thing.

30 Years Old, Married, 2 Kids
Bought the Fit because...
1. Fuel Efficiency (traded in the SUV)
2. Honda Reliability
3. Son is 6 now. In 10 years, what will he be driving? My 2008 Honda Fit (I hope). He claims he is saving up for a "better" car. Ha!

So far I don't see too many common demographics in any of the previous posts in this discussion, so my conclusion is that the Fit "fits" a lot of people. I'm a 52 yr old male with an 08 Sport Automatic that I use for a commuter car. I also have an 03 CR-V EX Automatic with 100K miles that is now mostly idle but our family would use for road trips or if all 4 of us went somewhere together. My 21 yrd old son also has an 08 Sport Automatic. My 52 yr old wife is getting a new 08 Sport Automatic next month. Our 19 yr old son has an 03 Civic LX Sedan Automatic. The Fit seems to be a very versatile vehicle that could suit a lot of people, once they accept the idea that it's time for 90% of Americans to stop driving these monster pickups/SUVs/Vans that I see everyday, with 80-90% of them occupied by 1 person - the driver.

I'm 32, not a student, no kids yet - I got the Fit because it has good safety ratings and the mileage is MUCH better than the Nissan 350Z I had. It drives smoother too. My husband was not going to be seen in the Fit though - he changed his mind when we got to the dealership and he looked at it and drove it. He's 6'3" and muscular and there's plenty of room for him.

25, Married Female, No kids (no thank you!), 2 dogs, City-dweller, One-car household, Real estate agent

Ordered Base AT Fit in Tidewater Blue (arriving any week now) due to:

1. Reliability & Safety- After a terrible experience with an '03 Pont Grand Prix I looked only at Honda & Toyota this time around. Due to my job, if the car is in the shop (even under warranty), it costs me tons of $$ because I have to rent a car to haul clients around and get to appointments. I am also pretty tough on cars (turn it on, run 5 mins, turn it off, show house, turn it on 5 mins, repeat 6-10 times) and needed something that could put up with that. The oodles of crash-test stars help ease my mind about "What if" with clients in the car

2. Cost-to-own/city mileage: After calculating spreadsheet after spreadsheet, there was simply no way to justify the nearly $10K price difference between a Fit and a Prius, even with pretending gas was $10/gal. Since I only see the highway maybe twice a year, city mileage is what its all about. It also looks promising for long-term values that a used Fit (at least around here) is the same cost as a new Fit. Conversely, my Grand Prix loses about $100 every week I wait for my new car.

3. Ability to haul people, pets, & stuff: I am thrilled with the idea of not having to call on my friend with a truck every time we need something from HD (being a die-hard DIYer, that happens frequently. Don't worry, she gets fed well ). Folding down seats and throwing dogs and camping gear in the back will be fantastic. I also found the backseat roomier than the Civic, surprisingly enough.

I am very glad to see so many sophisticated people driving Fits. One of my first concerns with this car is clients would not take me seriously in a "kid's car". I already struggle to prove my expertise and maturity far exceeds my years on the Earth. I am now very excited about owning my very first brand-spanking-new car!

68F widow. I totalled my minivan (lucky to be alive) and my 4 kids convinced me I needed something other than my '93 Merc. Capri turbo charged XR2 convertible (only 58000 miles on it). Had I been driving it, according to them, I wouldn't be here. So, I decided I wanted a used MINI Cooper, but after researching those, they aren't too safe either and repairs are very expensive. Now my Capri will stay in the garage with the top down for nice days only. The dealer wouldn't take it in trade, but says it is close to being a collectors' car.

I have had my new gorgeous Blackberry Sport AT for six days and love it. I do have to find one of the armrests from EBay or (?). I had the seats scotchgarded, and the first time my dog was in the car he started licking the seats! I hope when the new smell is gone he will stop that. I love being able to fold those seats down easily by myself. I couldn't do that with my Mercury villager van which I totalled.

Why the Fit by nichevo

34 y/o male
married w/2 kids, 3 and a half and 7 mos.

I am buying a Base 5AT Fit after 8 years of driving a 2000 Ford Ranger that now has 150,000+ miles on it and gets 18 mpg on a good day
My wife drives our minivan, (06 Dodge Grand Garavan) as she is only a 5 min drive from work.

Reasons:
1. Fuel efficiency, my job requires a lot of road time and starting in August I will be working out of a new location that is an hour away.
2. Honda reliability and safety.
3. Necessity, a pick up truck is not a family friendly vehicle and now that we have two kids, a second car that can transport them both is required.
