"were you shopping for a small station wagon or hatch in 2002 in Canada?"

First, I never buy brand new cars. I aim for used ones ~3 years old. That would have opened more options. VW's would be out because they're not reliable. I'd have to look at the details from back then, but a '99-'02 Accord or Camry wagon would have been my starting point. I would have bought an Accord or Camry wagon last year if they still made them. The Matrix is a little smaller than my ideal. I maybe would have got a CRV or RAV4 if they weren't so thirsty and had the stupid tire on the back. And the new CRV? No stick shift? Bo-oh-gus!

Anyway, my '06 Matrix had 8200 miles on it when I got it; newer and smaller than my new-old car target, but I still managed to pay for it with cash.

Here is a reply I got from the Minister of Transportation's Office.

Please read and EVERYONE call the number!!

By the way a seized transmission at high speed will cause a car to loss control.....

Thank you for your correspondence of June 12, 2008, to the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, regarding transmission problems with your Toyota Matrix. The Minister has asked me to reply on his behalf.

At the outset, please be assured that Transport Canada’s top priorities are safety and security. As such, the department establishes motor vehicle safety standards and enforces the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA). Section 10 of the MVSA requires a manufacturer or importer, upon discovering a defect in the design, construction or functioning of a vehicle or equipment that may affect the safety of any person, to notify the Minister of Transport and all affected vehicle or equipment owners.

The “Vehicle Defects and Recalls” section of Transport Canada’s website offers more information about the process by which potential defects are assessed by the Defects Investigation and Recalls Division.

With respect to your complaint, you may telephone a Defect Investigator at 1-800-333-0510 on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The investigator will require the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number of your Toyota Matrix. You may also file a complaint online via the Public Complaint Form .

I should mention that Transport Canada only has jurisdiction over safety issues. This being the case, matters involving financial disputes regarding dealer or manufacturer warranties are not covered by the MVSA and therefore cannot be addressed by the department.

I trust that the foregoing will be of assistance. Again, thank you for writing.

Yours truly,

Andrew Walasek
Senior Special Assistant

Thanks for the work. I live in the USA but my matrix was made in the Canada so i'll be calling the number. My transmission went out whilst doing 55 mph and I felt the front of the car was going to ripe of the frame. It scared me. To top it of I had my wife, her friend and most importantly my 3 year old in the car at the time. Let collectively make Toyota own up.

If you are in the USA and your car was first sold for use in the U.S., then you don't call Canada. You contact NHTSA instead. The website for reporting problems is below

Speedometer Issue by paul1hunter

Yesterday I started my 2005 Matrix and the check engine light was on. When I drove it the speedometer did not move-it was stuck at 0. Car ran fine though. This morning when I turned the car on the speedometer jumped up to 80. When I drove it the speedometer was all over the place-not reflecting the speed I was going. Then the car would rev up when I pushed on the accelerator but would not move much. It's really weird. I took it in to the dealer this morning and they seemed very perplexed when i described the issue to them. They are currently looking at it now. Has anyone every heard of a car doing this? It seems that there is some sort of disconnect between the speedometer and the accelerator.

Okay the dealer just called me back. Rodent damage. Apparently squirles crawled into the engine and chewed away the wire in 2 locations. The one they were able to repair but the other goes to the oxygen sensor and the entire unit has to be replaced. You can do all the preventative maintenace in the world, be prepared for as much as you can and then something like this happens. Fun fun.

Update on my transmission by slowzuki

My 03 transmission bearing had failed as was on its way to taking out the rest of the transmission. I bought a low mileage 2006 transmission out of a smashed Corolla and its been good so far.

It took me and my brother in law about 8 hours to swap the old one out and the new one in. He had got a hold of the instructions that skip the factory method so you don't drop the rack or cradle.

I was gonna replace the clutch at the same time but it looked in good shape.

You might regret that later. So much easier to do with the tranny already out, the whole clutch kit would have been less than $100.
