Full Test: 2007 Nissan Versa

I currently drive a 2000 Volvo XC wagon, but was looking for a fuel efficient but solid steering car for my next commuter car. I never heard of the Versa but got a chance to test drive the car when I went to the dealer to look at the Sentras yesterday. Boy was I impressed! They had two left in the lot and one was automatic (the SL) which is the one I tested. It steered very well, felt comparably solid to my Volvo and did not feel ricketty at all (which was my past experience with compacts). I am petite so I could do well in any small car, but I noticed that there would also be plenty of room for my husband who has a long torso. The back seats are very roomy; plenty enough for my 2 teenage sons. The cargo space appeared spacious enough for my Saturday errands and groceries, especially if the rear seats are down. And the amenities did not feel like I was losing much from my loaded Volvo (I really find I have more than I usually use anyway on the Volvo). So, I was pleasantly surprised and will probably purchase the one I looked at this week!

Re. the 'full-test' by Karen, I think the whole idea of "pounding through the gears" and testing a little grocery getter like the new Versa "running canyons", makes no sense whatsoever and does a great deal of damage to the new vehicles fragile reputation.
Come on folks, test drive this car in the CVT powertrain. It's the way cars will all be designed in the future. The all new Versa has great gas mileage, a tested trouble free CVT powertrain, loads of usable options never dreamed of in a compact, comfortable seats, lots of room for normal sized, to Super Sized drivers, a beautiful interior and dash design.
I am sick of reading negative reviews on little commuter cars because the tester was out driving it like a Corvette. Put your own money on the table for the Versa, then lets see if you still drive it like you stole it.

There are several aspects of this test I cannot agree with. While the tester compares this car to the Fit or the Yaris, it is actually better compared to the Civic or the Mazda three.
Firstly, the ride on this car is MUCH quieter and better than the Civic or the M3, it is amazing how much sound-deadening insulation is in the trunk and hood. You can't even hear the car running at idle.

Of course, auto reviewers _always_ want "more power", and little emphasis is given to fuel economy. It seems that car enthusiasm and ecology have to be mutually exclusive. The CVT-equipped model does not "race its revs", and is the only transmission of this quality at this price point.
The interior space is far more usable than a 06 Civic, and close to the Mazda 3 Sport-almost $6000 more expensive.
I was looking to buy a Mazda 3, but on a whim I tried all three Versa models and ended up buying the SL CVT. The handling is certainly better than the top-heavy Fit, but could benefit from better tires.

At $CDN19K, you have to spend at least $4K more to get features like ABS, EBFS, CVT, heated mirrors, 6-speaker stereo, 6-way seats and tilt steering, power everything from others, but you cannot match this fuel economy and ride quality. The fit and finish (paint, door gaps, interior fit) are impressive. I have three inches spare headroom in the back seat, and I'm 6'4".

I'm sure there are sportier cars for a lot more money, but I live in Southern Ontario, where bumper-bumper traffic is king, and high performance is truely pointless and ends up just contributing to more smog.
It's disspointing to see that a site like this makes the typical critical comments of pushing people to drive cars they cannot afford.

The reason why the Versa is compared to the FIT and YARIS is they are all Sub-Combacts and thier entry level cars. Granted the Versa is larger inside then either of the other cars, but they are all sub-compacts.

Funny. I know you are correct about this being a B platform car, but did you notice on your window sticker in the fuel economy section it says you should compare to other MIDSIZE cars?

No I didnt know that until I looked at it.. Intereting, I wonder why that is... Since the governement goes by the interior size to determin what class the cars go in..

So what we all have then is a Nissan Altima with

-a choppier, noisier (esp freeway) ride
-more upright and 'sporty' seating position
-better city mileage but slightly worse highway mileage
-less lateral room but potentially just as safe (5 star side impact rating)
-less overall cargo+rear seat length
-a hatch that one doesn't look rediculous stuffing a bike into

All for about 5 grand less! Seems like an OK compramise but not a great one.

Just filled up and I averaged 29 MPG, with the weather cooling off here in Phoenix, I don't have the A/C on as much, I do about 50/50 highway/city... This currently tank (2 days) I haven't had the A/C on at all, hopefully the MPG well go up.

well your comment about 'chopper ride' is funny, the car FEELS so european and so much less Japaness... It feels very much 'French' like, I had a 86 Peugeot 505 in 86 and this Versa feels just like it...
