It is helping me evaluate the Commander for future purchase consideration. For that I'm grateful. Never before have I researched a vehicle as thoroughly. TGI (thank goodness for the internet)

You have to watch the trees sometimes they get scared by the headlights and jump into the road.

Was it crash worthy? by teamyonex

I guess when you can walk away after hitting a tree head on, it did okay. But I'd like to hear more about the impression of the Commander's crash worthiness. The engine intrusion into the footwell and twisted pedals is alarming. Did the airbags fire correctly? What led to the crash? Was it a mechanical failure or driver error? I get the feeling there is more to this story.

The crash occured trying to avoid another vehicle. I too am alarmed by the engine intrusion. I thought that these things are meant to be designed so that the engine slides under the passenger compartment in a head on, not into.

Hopefully you weren't wearing the flip flops in the foot well photo...they've been known to cause a few accidents.

Wrap Up by steve_ HOST

"A grassy median was the only thing that separated the 2006 Jeep Commander from the big oak ahead, and the Commander's wide front grille met tree bark within seconds. Bam! Leaves showered down upon us as we crawled out of the crumpled, hissing Commander and staggered away.

Just like that, our long-term 2006 Jeep Commander test ended, two months earlier than planned. Days later the insurance company confirmed what we already knew at the scene. The Commander, with the engine pushed so far back that it peeked into the front footwells, was beyond repair."
