Wrap Up Long-Term Test: 2006 Kia Sedona EX - We experienced only minor issues with our Sedona outside of its regular maintenance schedule, and each of them fell under Kia's incredible warranty. Mechanical reliability was never questioned over its 25,000-mile lifetime in our fleet. Its low purchase price and good quality make it a great value up front. (more)

I totally agree with the long term test and here are my comments with our 2006 Kia Sedona EX.

The first 5000 km's were great. No warranty issues, except for really bad fuel efficiency. We were getting 20L/100KM, which is 5-7L/100km more than its rated.

After the first 6 months problems began to arise. First, we started to experience really rough idle and acceleration when coasting at 50-60kms under light load. Eventually, this roughness turned into an extreme shake and flashing check engine light.

Into the dealer for a week only to receive the vehicle back with the light cleared but no replacement parts. The dealership said "it is running normally".

Another 1000 kms later, again, severe shaking, CEL, back to dealer. Again, cleared code, no parts replaced, everything is working fine.

Another 1000 kms later, again, severe shaking, CEL. This time I contacted Kia Canada, had the Western Canadian regional service manager involved. Towed to a new dealer, had the computer flashed with an update and vehicle returned. This took 3 days. By the way, the CEL only indicates misfires. The OBD really sucks on the Kia Sedona.

Now, it has been 2000kms and we again experienced the shaking,CEL. Back to dealer and the cleared it. No flashes, parts replaced, nothing.

I have now been attempting to sell the vehicle. This is where I realised how bad a decision we made in purchasing the Kia. The wholesale value is only $17000 Cdn, even though it's only 1 year old with 15,000 kms. We purchased it new for $40,000.

I wish we had lemon laws here in Canada, but alas, we don't have any significant recourse except to sue.

I guess the old saying is true: "Buyers be ware".

My Kia Sedona now has 19000 miles with no problems, average 22 mpg at highway speeds. If it holds up I will be a very happy camper. Plan to drive it 100000 miles.

I have the same experience with my 2007 Sodona. The same thing happened one week after I took delivery of the bland new van - shaking violently and very low revolutions and 'Check Engine' light flashing. Took them 3 weeks to fix the 'computer problem.' Last Saturday, exactly one year anniversary of the delivery of the van, it began to shake violently and the 'Check Engine' light flashed once again. Brought it for service. As of today, Thursday, they still haven't been able to fix it. And then 2 months ago, I found out that somebody had re-painted the front bumper before the van was delivered to me. Now the paint is peeling off but nobody is claiming responsibilty. So there is, a lemon. I can say for sure I will never buy a KIA again.

Put 30,000 miles our our 2006 Sedona and loved it. Very few problems. Got 21 mpg at 80 mph with 3 passengers and a full load. Only problem is low resale value. Keep it for 100,000 miles and you can come out ahead.
