I was responding to your differentiation between reliability and longevity, which are definitely two different things in the automotive world. A reliable car will not necessarily have longevity. Example: I have owned a few cars and have never been stranded on the side of the road due to a mechanical or computer malfunction. From that, you can say I have always owned "reliable" cars - regardless of the total miles driven in said cars and regardless of how long I owned those cars. A car with longevity: I owned a 1980 Datsun/Nissan 200sx on which I put 323,000 miles in about 9 years. That car exhibited both longevity (from the high miles per year over 9 years) and reliability (only leaving me stranded once for a short time from a rotted radiator). So, in summary, a hybrid or any car CAN exhibit traits of longevity unrelated to reliability if it accumulates miles very quickly. It might break down five or six times in 150,000 miles in that first five years. But it has performed like a 10-year-old car in relation to longevity. That's like putting the car in a time warp.

Replying to: gagrice (Sep 25, 2007 2:15 pm) I did not consider the "7500 mile" option when I was considering new vehicles in 2006. The "new-used" VWs were too expensive in my opinion. Plus, at least here in Los Angeles, diesel tends to be MORE expensive than premium fuel. I am hoping for Honda diesels in the CR-V and / or Accord in 2009. I will be out of my current lease then, and would probably go with such a model. I consider the technology proven, and Honda has been offering diesels overseas for several years. |
