Article Comments: Comparison Test: 2007 Jaguar XK8 Coupe vs. 2006 BMW 650i Coupe
|
I recently purchased a new BMW 650i (Alpine white with Sport pkg. - as your test vehicle) after testing the Jag, Lexus, MB and Bentley, the Bimmer handles better, accelerates faster and is a real pleasure to drive. The complaints on the iDrive is understood, but I use the voice control to access just about anything on the menu, without touching the iDrive. Bluetooth is a godsent. I live in the Miami area where there are many, many lux coupes out there, but the BMW always turn heads Only complaint is the one weird cup holder. Absolutely, no regrets buying this car. |

Car and Driver compared luxury ragtops and put the Jag in third place, behind Mercedes SL and Porsche 911 but ahead of the Bimmer 650. Consumer Reports is going to do a comparison of costly coupes in September. I'd wait for a few more of these before declaring a clear winner here. I own a 330ci and X5 but am leaning toward the XK with a mesh grille for my next coupe(looks like the XKR but more of a highway grand tourer than a Corvette wantabe). If BMW offered a 635 in the U.S. -- turbo six with 300 horses and good gas mileage -- that might pull me away from the Jag. |

| I currently drive a BMW 740iL so obviously I prefer BMW's to begin with, however in fairness I think the Jag is a looker (for the most part). My issue with the Jaguar is it's somewhat generic front grill and it's (to me anyway) plain interior. I don't think enough was done to really make it seem and feel like a special machine from the driver's seat. The interior looks as if you didn't know better you would guess it was the interior of the new Mercury Milan or Ford Montego. The BMW's interior may not be to everyone's taste but having said that I think it has flair that's both good and bad. I prefer the more classically styled BMW's to most of Bangle's designs though I applaud the bravery in bringing a fresh and new design language to a market flooded with "me too's". As far as the exteriors of both cars go, to me the Jag wins the looks contest from the rear but the Bimmer wins from the front while I think the profiles are tied with maybe a slight edge going to the Jag. Jaguar's muscular rear haunches definitely look the part while to my eyes the BMW's twin kidney grills and halo'd headlight's give a menacing glare into the rear view mirror of the unsuspecting lane dawdler. No question in my mind that the Bimmer is the better handling/performance machine in this contest so for those reasons I'd spend my money at the BMW dealership. | |
650i can eat the XK for lunch

I purchased the BMW convertible. I liked the extra room and it did have better pickup (plus the supercharger whine wasn't as sexy as the low growl of the BMW). There was only an xk8 at our local dealership, so I had not driven the xkr. After less than 9 months, I'm putting the BMW up for sale and getting the jag. The car drives fine, but the idrive is a nightmare. I have had it in the shop 7 times for reprogramming and it never completely solves the problem. Looking at various message boards, it looks like this is a problem with BMW's idrive and I doubt they will ever get it fixed- they refuse to do anything but reload the software. I agree with nanne- the resale of the Jag is horrid, but there are already some 1000-5000 mile '07 xkr's out there and the depreciation has already been taken |
