If an engine is cammed to be most efficient in the lower rpm ranges, you would be completely correct. If, however, the engine is more efficient in the top end (as in the 5.7 litre semi-hemi v-8), it's entirely possible that a lower (mechanically, higher numerically) gear might actually help not only mileage, but also top end. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but I assure you that there is substance to this argument. My Daytona is a dog in the low to medium speeds, but will deliver accelleration that simply amazes me (not easy to do) at 120 mph. I was tangling with a Carrera at the Palm Beach Raceway last week, and when we hit it from about 65-75 mph, he would walk me. At one point, we were already moving at about 120, and both hit it. To my astonishment, my Charger simply catapulted past the Carrera, and left me as slack-jawed as was the Porsche jock. Go figure. I AM A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER WHO SUGGESTS THAT ALL MOTORISTS RESPECT POSTED SPEED LIMITS, AND NOT ATTEMPT THE ACTIONS DESCRIBED IN MY POST OUTSIDE OF A SANCTIONED RACE TRACK Thanks again! : ) Used2bFast |

I have an appointment with the dealer to look at it. If they say there's nothing wrong, it goes on the chopping block, and I'm getting myself a Pontiac GXP with a small-block 327 - probably what I should have done from the outset. Thanks again! Replying to: xtec (Jul 11, 2006 2:13 pm) Just reading through your post on your Chargers because I always wondered how they compared to my 06 Mustang GT. But what I wanted to see is if the Dodge motor needs to be retuned like the ford when adding aftermarket parts - intake, headers and such. On the 4.6L V8 I had to have the car tuned to correct the fuel/air ratio among other things. They also advance the timing if you run good 93 octane fuel (BP) for even more power. Just through bolt on's I was able to gain 82HP which I found incredible. CAI, long tube headers, x-pipe, cats, mufflers (Borla) and, 3:73 gear. This put me just under 13 seconds in the 1/4 mile and to 60 in 4.8 seconds. Not shabby at all, faster then the stock SRT-8. Also with only 4000 miles on the engine I am seeing 17mpg in the city and as much as 28 mpg on the highway at 65 mph. Anyway, just wondering about the Dodge hemi compared to the Ford V8 in these areas. Dan
