Please, take no offense to this, this is just my opinon. But unless you do not know how to drive stick, this car, and sports cars in general are never to be purchased with auto trans. This one especially. This transmition is always hunting for gears, personally, the worst auto trans I've ever driven. On the other hand, the stick is one of the best on the market. Sorry to break that to you. I know you probably love that car, i would if i had it. Problem is, at 6'5" i barely fit in it... actually i dont.
Again sorry. If you don't know how to drive stick, learn, and trade your car in for one with a manual trannie...

You say that, yet...
At the Zoom Zoom Live event, the Miatas with automatics were besting the times for the manual ones. Consistently. Best time, average time, the autos were quicker, across the board.
Sure, maybe a pro can squeeze more out of the manual, and I agree they're certainly more fun, but on that day, on that track, the automatic KILLED the manual every time, it was just embarassing.

Sure on performance it beats the manual tranni... But most people don't get a chance to floor their gas pedal every takeoff of every day. Most miata buyers want to have a "connection" with the car as they go on their sunday morning scenic drive. Most people do not want a automatic hunting for gears while maintaining a constant speed on a level road. Yeah that happened to me. I got on the highway, via a downward sloping entrance ramp, and took it up to 60 mph. Do you know that when i reached 60 mph it went from 6 to 4 back up to 6 down to 5 down to 4 and finally settling on 5th gear. Then after exiting the highway and coming to a stop, i lightly accelerated. Do you know that that car's transmition started off in second, which by itself isn't bad, but from second it went down to first, then back up to second. All in the time it takes to go, with constant acceleration, from zero to 25mph. That is one stupid transmition. And obviously it wasn't the only automatic doing funny things.

I'd never buy an auto Miata, I was just sharing what I observed.
I'm quite happy with my manual, it probably has one of the best shifters in the industry (as long as the shifter turret has gear oil).

I don't know anything about car engines...what's wrong with a Miata automatic? I've got a 2008 on order and I would expect it to run like any other CAR. Can you shed some light? Thanks

Basically, the engine never knows what gear to be in. So your driving experience will be very herky-jerky and it will sound confused. If it's not to late to change your order... I presume you do not know how to drive stick... otherwise you would have not ordered the auto... I suggest you get some lessons. The miata is a great car to drive in stick.
BTW... Did you test drive a car in auto? If you don't know anything about engines you may not have noticed.

Thanks for the info. I find it difficult to believe that for almost $30k the car will be confused. My first car was a lime green Vega 4 speed so I know how to drive a stick I just don't want to.

I can share my experience with you...I have the six speed auto-matic and yes, it goes from 6th, to 5th quite a bit when climbing a small incline even on the highway. I wouldn't call it jerky because it's a mooth change in gears, but yes, it does drop to 5th gear quite a bit..I think they should have stuck with the 5 speed auto instead. I sometimes manually change gears for the fun of it and it gives you 3 more horses under your hood. So, yes, your automatic will change gears qite often! I still LOVE it! It doesn't bother me because it's so smooth and sporty.

I like the six speed automatic regardless of what gear it goes into. Yes, it does drop from 6th gear to 5th quite often. It's underpowered in 6th gear. It will go from 6th gear to 5th gear even on a small incline on the highway. I still prefer it over the stick. With the automatic, you get both w/o the clutch! Zoom-Zoom

Thanks for the info. I figured it would be smooth and not jerky. As long as the engine works like any other car I've had I really don't care how the internal stuff works. I have an SUV and know I don't like how they handle. It's like you step on the gas then a few seconds later it kicks in and then you are stepping on the break to slow it down. Never had an SUV before this year and will be selling it as soon as the MX-5 arrives!
