I have a automatic 2002 Saab Linear - I get ~34 mpg on the highway (I280 in California) for my daily commute at about 70mph. Bought the car new, a little over 60K miles on it. I get about 24 mpg for city traffic.

I have a 2001 Aero sedan, manual transmission. 80K miles, routinely maintained.   If I nurse the car a bit I can get 25 mpg all in, and that's probably 70% city driving. Nice thing about the manual is that I can engage the clutch down even the most modest of hills which--at least in other cars I've owned with a live MPG meter--pretty much pegs it at 99+ mpg while hurdling down hills in neutral. These little bursts with the car out of gear and the RPMs floating just below 1000 really seem to help boost fuel economy quite a bit. Not a lot of fun, really. But a way for me to get 25-26 mpg in mostly city driving.   On proper highway trips, I find it easy to get 30-31 mpg if I keep it under 75 mph, and that's garage to destination, not just on the highway.

Replying to: pf_flyer (Jun 12, 2006 8:22 am) My wife is the principal driver of our '05 Arc wagon, but I sit-in frequently. Our driving is mostly non-city and we're getting about 28 mpg using AC. I think on a trip to Maine a couple of years ago we squeaked out 29.5, but that was with major use of cruise and in Fall with little AC use. I took out the driving lamp fuse for a while to see if there was a significant gain (none). Since the car is deep blue, it seemed more important to be seen than to save the odd quarter. One way to significantly increase mileage is freewheeling downhill and with those giant front brakes, it's tempting. However: dangerous and illegal. Don't. If you need the mileage, dump the SAAB, buy an econobox.
