I have a 9-5 Aero wagon. The onboard computer seems to do time averaging over a long period. It usually reads about 21 mpg. Heavy stop and go will reduce it to 20 mpg. I recently measured 25 mpg, while the display showed 23. The highest value I've ever seen on the display has been 24 mpg.

I have a 2002 9-5 Linear with Automatic Transmission with about 57,000 miles. Just took it on a trip last week from Minneapolis to Kansas City, MO. Over 500 miles on one tank of gas. I averaged 30.5 MPG according to the trip computer going an average of 79 MPH on the freeway. I did some manual calculations and came up with about 29.5 or so. Repeated the performance on the way back up. 30.5 MPG. Same speed 79MPH. I was pretty impressed for a car this size. Last year I got about 29 or better going to Chicago.
Around town we get 22-25 MPG regularly.
We've had the car since 36k miles.

I've had a 2000 9-5 Aero 5-speed manual for about 3 1/2 years. If I keep it below 70, I get around 33 mpg on the interstate. Around town it's usually about 21 in the winter and 22 in the summer. Manual transmissions are just so much more engaging. I have a cell phone, but I don't talk on it while driving unless I set up an earphone or headphone with mic before I start moving. I feel an auto transmission encourages poor cell phone driving habits.

I have a 1999 9-5 with the low boost turbo. I routinely get 21-22 mpg in town and on long trips I have never failed to get less than 30-34 mpg. I have gotten a computer advertised 34 mpg while averaging 74 mph on an 8 hr 45 minute trip. I think that is very good for such a roomy car.

2003 Aero Wagon. Auto Manual is good enough for me. I average about 395-400 miles per tank in LA traffic, commuting from SFV to Mid-Wilshire. That's about 21.5 mpg. When we can cruise for a distance like an early morning run to San Diego I get about 25MPG. The most I have gone is about 475 miles on one tank..

Actually, it's got nothing to do with a manual transmission. I have a automatic 2002 Saab Linear - I get ~34 mpg on the highway (I280 in California) for my daily commute at about 70mph. Bought the car new, a little over 60K miles on it. I get about 24 mpg for city traffic.

We have a 2001 SE v6. In the city we get around 21 to 22 mpg--varies based on running air conditioner. On the highway we get 30+ mpg.

I have a 2001 Aero sedan, manual transmission. 80K miles, routinely maintained.

If I nurse the car a bit I can get 25 mpg all in, and that's probably 70% city driving. Nice thing about the manual is that I can engage the clutch down even the most modest of hills which--at least in other cars I've owned with a live MPG meter--pretty much pegs it at 99+ mpg while hurdling down hills in neutral. These little bursts with the car out of gear and the RPMs floating just below 1000 really seem to help boost fuel economy quite a bit. Not a lot of fun, really. But a way for me to get 25-26 mpg in mostly city driving.

On proper highway trips, I find it easy to get 30-31 mpg if I keep it under 75 mph, and that's garage to destination, not just on the highway.

My wife is the principal driver of our '05 Arc wagon, but I sit-in frequently. Our driving is mostly non-city and we're getting about 28 mpg using AC. I think on a trip to Maine a couple of years ago we squeaked out 29.5, but that was with major use of cruise and in Fall with little AC use. I took out the driving lamp fuse for a while to see if there was a significant gain (none). Since the car is deep blue, it seemed more important to be seen than to save the odd quarter. One way to significantly increase mileage is freewheeling downhill and with those giant front brakes, it's tempting. However: dangerous and illegal. Don't. If you need the mileage, dump the SAAB, buy an econobox.
