Good point, thanks. I've been searching for information on that on the web today. If anyone has any info on exporting cars from the US to Italy, I'd welcome advice and suggestions. Thank you.

Hi,

I am exporting to Italy these days my 3-year old ML350 from Switzerland (which, as USA, is a non-EC State). On a value of approx US$ 25,000 I will end up paying approx US$ 7500 of which the biggest portion is the 20% VAT tax on the car value. You need to hire a service Agency, for the car must pass inpection on items such as lights, safety belts, brakes, etc. and it's all very time-consuming. Luckily my car came with a EC-conformity certificate and it simplifies things a bit.

I suggest you be in contact with an import specialist as Bondesan (www.bondesan.com). They used to do this kind of service in the past, but I never dealt with them.

Good Luck !

thanks for the response. I'll look up bondesan.com. Importing seems to be very expensive, obviously, as someone earlier pointed out. Plus the cost of shipping from the US - maybe it's not a sensible option for us after all

If you already own the RX400h, I would sell it here while the market is hot. Then buy something over there. You could be tied up in Italian red tape for years. It may also be impossible to get good service and warranty work in Italy. Check out the fellow in Honduras with a Civic hybrid that cannot get the Honda dealer to touch it as they do not sell that model.

Keep in mind that if you relocate for good with furniture etc you might be exempt from the VAT tax, as long as you keep your car and do not sell it for an x period of time (probably one year). You may want to check with the Italian Embassy or a Consulate in the US.

I do not know well Lexus in Italy, but there are many RX300 around. I never saw an hybrid but if you move close to the Milan area, in less than one hour drive you can have your car serviced in Lugano, Switzerland, where 400H are quite popular...

good thought, thank you. I'll look into the Tax situation. I thought I saw a few RX 400Hs in Rome when we were there a few months ago. Thanks!
