Hi Guys,
Was planning on buying a G35 when I decided to check out pre-owned/certified Mercedes at a Dealer. They had a 2004 black CLK500 with only 9000 miles for the same price as the G35 (Around $38,000). The Mercedes is really a smoking deal...almost too good to be true.

The car is certified and under waranty for 2 more years so it's REALLY tempting! My concern, between the killer MPG (15/18), all the electrical problems I hear it has with the gagets, and the high cost of maintenance/repairs I'm really scared.

...And I don't have experience with German cars or Mercedes

Your thoughts and ideas?
Thanx,
MickeyVee

CLK 500 ELECTRICAL-SMALL PROBLEMS by aontai

I am VERY interested in the 2006 CLK 500. After reading some of the messages, I noted some talk about electrical problems. One was that the engine stopped while on the freeway and the power steering stopped functioning. Can anyone give me some feedback on CLK electrical problems. Electrical problems is a very serious safety issue and problem when driving down the freeway at 65MPH.

Feedback???

I own a 2003 Infiniti G35 Coupe with everything on it. I am selling it and buying a Mercedes CLK. As MotorTrend Magazine said, the G35 out BMW'd BMW. That's the gratifying part. However, I add this from my own experience: The Infiniti is terrific on dry pavement and handles extremely well. Great brakes, great acceleration, etc. I have driven it at speeds in excess of 110 and it is rock solid at speed. The Infiniti engineers did a lot right. For that I admire them.

They did one thing very bad. The on-board computer cannot handle rain-slick highways. On a 8-land freeway during torential rains, the G35 began to hydroplane. Normally, in such a situation, the drive of rear drive auto (G35) needs to back off the gas, steer in the direction the car is drifting, to straighten out the vehicle. The Infiniti on board computer, however, threw on the brakes and shut off the engine. This spun the G35 across four lanes of heavy traffic. I now drive it with the on board computer in the OFF position. I will not buy another car of any make for which the computer cannot be disengaged.

I mention this because I suspect modern auto's with on board computers assume the driver does not know what he/she is doing much less how to correct for a drift. The electronics have escalated on all manufacturer's cars. For example, Infiniti told me they simply could not tell why my the xenon headlight would not stay on and advised I wait until it failed. Aside from safety concerns, it likely would get a fix-it ticket. The simpler a car the better in my opinion. And turn off your on board computer especially on slick roads unless you really don't know what you are doing, in which case it likely won't make any difference anyway.

I was actually looking at an almost same deal. was really intersted in a merc for that price. The only thing that came close was a 2003-2004 clk500 with 15K + miles and i wanted an ALMOS NEW card, not one that 20k miles on this. but u r getting good deal.

However, i got the g35 coupe with auto and it makes me smile, it makes me happy and i couldnt ask for more... . plus how can i buy an clk500 when the clk550 is out heh...

Hydroplaning is a combination of the incorrect tires and or too much speed. I have the awd g35x and even with all season Goodyear RSA tires, that car is a snowmobile on snowy icy roads, not to mention rain soaked roads. However, if I am driving 85 miles per hour when conditions don't merit that type of speed, I'm asking for problems
