Warranty problems stink by lrivera72

For any of us who have ever experienced warranty issues on a vehicle, I feel your pain. I have experienced warranty issues with a 1998 Toyota Corolla and a 2001 Nissan Maxima. Both were problems related to the engine and the manufacturer warranty would not cover the defects which occurred within 3k miles on the vehicle. I currently drive a 2006 Mazda 3i Touring w/SAB & ABS.

Manufacturers play the numbers games with their warranties and if anyone expects them to pay all the time, their expectations are very wrong. The manufacturer's warranties all have loopholes, the biggest one being that they will not repair any part/components that are still operable. Where a good extended warranty comes in, is in this instance, because a good warranty company will pay for items that are not working as they are intended too. I am a loan officer for a credit union, so I would advise checking around your local credit unions for extended warranties because they must stand behind the products that they offer AS WELL AS the warranty company. Try to look for a plan that is a named exclusion, not a named component which is what most warranties are (manufacturer or third party).

Also to debunk a myth, there is no such thing as a manufacturer that offers an extended warranty. There are companies that specialize in offering warranties for a particular manufacturer, but never will a manufacturer endorse an extended warranty. They are all third party warranties. If you have bought a warranty believing that it is directly from the manufacturer, look at the fine print and see who wrote the policy. Motor companies are not in the insurance business, and nor should they be.

In sum, buy a good warranty for a fair price and you will be covered. But do not buy without doing your research first.

Good points - Hard to recall all the details - but my experience with extended warranty is not good.

I bought a Nissan 4x4 back in 1986 - it was a dealer demo - so when was about to sign the contract I discovered that since the vehicle had been placed in service several months prior the warranty started back then.

Back in 1986 most companies had a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty - and even though this truck only had a couple thousand miles on it - it only had 6 months or so warranty left.

I told them to forget it - and was about to go buy the Toyota - when the offered an extended warranty AT COST - I said I was not interested so the dropped the price down to ZERO. It was 5 years or 50,000 miles - bumper to bumper. I thought what a deal!

After several years or hard use the truck developed a few MAJOR problems - the tranny - the brake booster (?) - & the AC compressor all needed to be replaced - best I can recall it was close to $3,000 - man was I glad I had the FREE extended warranty.

I paid the repair bill and filed the claim with the warranty company.

Several months passed.

I got a letter from the warranty company - they were in process of filling bankruptcy.

I got a letter from them about every year or so - and then one day I got a settlement notice - If I agreed to accept the settlement I would get a check - if not I would become a general creditor. I think the amount offered was $1.78 - thats right ONE DOLLAR and SEVENTY-EIGHT CENTS.

Guess what my opinion is of extended warranties?
