Its a JTEKT 4WD system with Intelligent Torque Controlled Coupling.
It is not the same system as the Santa Fe uses, which is a Borg Warner.

Hey rottencar.....are you by any chance a Toyota salesman that has lost a few deals to Hyundai?

Just curious....

I have had my VC for four months and think the quality and engineering is great. I have had no problems whatsoever.

Coming from a Lexus RX 300 and also having a Toyota 4Runner, I have a frame of reference and a basis for my opinion. Both are great cars, and not perfect. I would say that my VC stacks up very nicely to my RX 300 and then some even with the 350 at about $9K less.

Have you heard about the oil foaming/sludge problem on Toyota and Lexus engines? THAT to me is far more serious risk/defect than a downshifting thump or a keyless entry that activates in your pocket. They had to extend the warranty on the engines due to that very problem.

Even the "big boys" have their problems....and, nothing is perfect.

Is one 4WD system better then the other, JTEKT vs Borg Warner?

According to Korean website similar to this site, VC is all time AWD.

Basically, if you don't push the buttion to lock, VC automatically controls distribution of power between rear wheel and front wheel in accordance with road conditon. I remember that maximum ratio is 50(rear):50(front) and minimum is 10(rear):90(front)

However, If you push the button to lock, VC maintains distribution of power between rear wheel and front wheel as 50:50 until its speed goes up to around 30 miles but if its speed exceeds 30 miles, the lock is automatically released and VC automatically controls the distribution again.

The JTEKT system is supposed to offer "more sensitive and accurate control for all driving conditions. Due to tighter tolerances, the need for a Steering Angle Sensor was eliminated. Updated control module logic was used, and the hardware was reinforced for better performance and durability." Seeing as how the Veracruz is basically a stretched, more refined and upmarket Santa Fe with a larger engine, it would seem that Hyundai didn't think that the BW unit met its NVH requirements so went with the Japanese.

I've had several opportunities to run my VC through the snow in some pretty severe conditions over the last 2 weeks and it's nothing short of outstanding. My last AWD vehicle was a Honda CRV which I thought was terrible in the snow. In that vehicle you could easily detect when the AWD engaged as the front wheels had to slip before the rear kicked in. In the VC you never notice anything and it just walks right through the snow. The ESC is great too. Very sophisticated system. The wife has Stabilitrak in her Vibe, which is good, but it's nothing compared to the system in the VC. Hyundai really has a winner here. I'm extremely happy with it. 10K miles and no problems to speak of yet.

Hi kenrob,

I am 6'1" tall and I too have the same problem. I purchased the VC GLS (cloth manual seats) in July '07. We only have 5000 miles on it and I absolutely hate the driver seat position. Unfortunately, when we went to first buy it, our local dealer had no other VC models in stock. I so wish I bought the power seat option.

I am completely unable to find a position that is comfortable, except by pumping the seat all the way down. Even then, my legs and thighs are way out front of the seat.

I called Hyundai consumer affairs and they would not do anything because, as my service advisor said, the seat is operating as designed. I would even pay to have the seat swapped for the power one, but they would not do it.

I am very, very close to trading this in for another non-hyundai vehicle. The difficult thing is that the car is for my wife and she likes it. SHe only wishes I bought her the Lexus RX model, but we do not have the cash.
