wknj,

the belt replacement kit is a very quick repair. I do not believe there is any long term damage to worry about.

all they do is replace the belt with a longer belt that gets routed different on all the pullies to remove the noise.

Eventhough I have had it done, there is still a very small amount of noise, but much improved after the repair.

My noise also was not that loud but since I drove in traffic every morning I always heard the noise around 35mph at 1400-1500 rpm.

The only noise I hear now sounds more like the sound of the engine at the same speed and rpm, not the resonating noise.

Thanks for the info.....so your are saying that If I do nothing no damage will occur? That belt is buried in that small engine compartment and its hard to believe those low paid mechanics can do it correctly without screwing anything else up. (obviously they can) I paid cash for my EX and the last thing I want is some fairly skilled mechanic taking pieces of my engine to get a new belt on....again thanks for your comments

No pieces of the engine need be removed. The hydraulic belt tensioner needs to be compressed to release the old belt but essentially it it a new longer belt that is re-routed around the pulleys. Worry more about the repairs for both the potential oil leaks and the "glove box noise" repairs if you don't want people fooling around with your car. The oil leak requires about 8 hrs to complete and the other requires replacement of the motor mount.

wknj,

I was also nervous when I had the belt replacement and motor mount that they would damage or scratch the car.

I was rather surprised that the work was done well with nothing done to the car other than the repairs.

Like you, I will hold the car for another year or so then trade.

I had an 86 civic Si and an 86 accord LXI, both of which got 200,000+ miles with no majaor repairs other than routine works like brakes, oil changes, fluid changes, etc.

I will be going back to subaru (I had a 05 that was hit pretty bad) as the 05 I had was perfect until it was hit.

I would buy honda again but not a civic of this shape/design.

Get the repairs done so that when you trade you can show the car had warranty work done, it might help get a little more when trading.

A Honda service bulletin has been issued to identify and repair oil leaks from one of about 5 or 6 potential "oil sealing" bolts scattered around the 1.8 liter 06 Civic engines. These bolts didn't exactly do what Honda supposed they would (i.e. seal) so oil leaks have shown up on some Civics. There is a large range of serial numbers potentially affected. Some engine disassembly required and a fair amount of repair time too. I think 2007's are exempt. So, if you own a 2006 and find oil outside your engine (or on the garage floor) instead of within there IS a TSB for it. Oh, and if turns out the puddle on your garage floor isn't oil but power steering fluid instead there is a service bulletin for that one too.
