Replying to: micweb (Jan 10, 2007 11:11 am) Something to look forward to... especially for me, since i'm in the market for a car, the fit is at the top of my list, but had too many complaints about the 2007 to justify the purchase. Here's to hoping cruise control and spoilers will be options indenpedent of one another

Replying to: cmk (Jan 10, 2007 11:50 am) That was actually the thing that almost kept me buying the Fit. I use cruise all the time, but I liked the look of the Fit without the sideskirts. Now that I've had the Fit for over a month, I guess I'm used to them, and they don't scrape even on my steep driveway. Maybe when the weather gets warm I'll see how easy it is to remove them and how it looks without them. But I'm still glad I bought the Fit. I was also thinking about the Versa, but the cargo area behind the 2nd row of the Fit is a lot bigger, and on a trip to the airport with four medium sized suitcases in the back (2 sideways and 1 vertical and they only reached to 1/2 up the rear headrests) plus a diaper bags and stroller back there, I wouldn't want a smaller luggage area. The Matrix was also on my short list, but the guages were hard to read and I wasn't happy with the seating position. It would have cost a few thousand more too. |

if the '09 Fit will have the diesel that it is likely to have in Europe, or if they will deliver the sorta-promised hybrid option instead. That said, put in some map lights and softer/better dash and door materials, and I am there! I WOULD like to see more fuel-efficient powertrain options for the next-gen though. I can afford to wait until we get more info about it next year before doing anything about a new car. |

Several post have mentioned the possibilities of a diesel in future Honda products. Asking this as a genuine question. Looking for genuine answers. From personal observations I've not witnessed anything approaching stellar performance from diesels in passenger cars. Diesels do handle heavy loads better. Busses, 18 wheelers, tractors, earth moving equipment, tanks and such seem to perform better and last longer than gasoline engines, if properly maintained. However modern gas engines seem to go well over 200K miles if properly maintained. For the average 15K per year driver that is 13+ years. Long enough to get really tired of a car and ready for something newer. I have a few friends with diesel pickups. Real world is that they don't have the acceleration of my gas fueled Ram with light or virtually no load. Diesel fuel mileage without heavy load is about the same as gas with the newer diesels and a lot worse than gas with the older ones. Diesel fuel cost more. Diesel cars/pickups cost more new and generally bring less when traded/sold. Maintenance on diesels is generally more expensive as many have two oil filters and hold more oil. In hard working vehicles where the engine is under heavy loads most of the time the Diesel is King. But for everyday commuting, lots of idling, soccer mom duties and such, does the diesel really do as well as gas? Does it do better? If so, in what way? Thanks, Kip

the only back-to-back comparo we have is Mercedes new E-class. The V-6 gas and the diesel have the same performance 0-60, in fact the diesel is slightly faster, while the diesel also used 40% less fuel during road testing. Honda's new 2.2L diesel is a sure thing for the next Accord, although maybe not at launch. The '09 Fit wouldn't need such a big diesel for such a little car. I bet we could see real-world averages in the high 40s mpg with a diesel engine. Does Honda have such a diesel ready to go? No, I believe it doesn't. Imagine if they put the 2.2 in! It would be a rocket, while returning higher mpg than the gas! My bet, since they did make the official announcement, is we see a hybrid Fit instead, one designed solely for maximum fuel efficiency rather than speed of any sort. Now that Insight is off the market, Honda needs a new model to retain its bragging rights of highest-fuel-efficiency car sold. |

As a new member, I appreciate all of the input that I've gotten concerning the Fit. I've been informed that my car (Vivid Blue Pearl, 5 spd) should be arriving in 2-3 weeks, I can hardly contain myself!! I must admit, though, that reading all of this info, both pro & con has caused some anxiety, but in the end, I've decided that this IS going to be my first TOTALLY new car, & I am not going to wait for the next version (which in the past has left me disappointed). I'd seen an ad in a magazine, and went online to Honda.com and fell in love. After trying for weeks to get a test drive, I managed to score one in an automatic. I had to get the salesman to understand that I was not willing to just "settle" for what was on hand, I wanted a 5 spd. I will post an update later. Thanx to all of you!! Fittman |
