Thank you hungarian83. I was curious as well and was thinking I would have to hold out for the 2008 model for the kinks to get worked out. I've seen the Jazz when traveling and I always wondered "why doesn't the US have that" I remember even taking a picture with one in Greece. Anyway I guess that answers my questions. I'm in!

hungarian83,

If rumors of the Fit being built in the US is true, then wouldn't the prudent buyer either make sure they are getting the Japanese built one or wait the year or so for production quirks to work itself out? My thinking is since the production line would be new, then there would invariably be initial manufacturing "mistakes". Do you think that would still apply even though the Fit has been in production for so long?

The US and Canadian market Fits will be built in Japan for the time being. Honda announced this in summer 2005 when they finally announced that the Fit would be arriving. They haven't said what plant, but since there is currently only one Japanese factory that makes the Fit (Suzuka), it would have to be there.

The rumor that the Fit will be built in the US is just that, a rumor. It is possible (and likely) that Honda will build the Fit in the United States in the future, but they haven't officially announced anything, and it definitely wouldn't happen until the second generation. If you look at the CR-V, it was introduced to the US in MY 1997. Only this coming model year will it be produced in the United States as well. If the Fit does take off in the US and Canada, Honda may need to add the Fit to an existing North American plant.

My guess is that it will be several years still before a US-made Fit exists.

I can't say for sure, but the Suzuka plant was the first one to build the Fit in 2001. I would have to think that after all these years, the problems would be worked out, especially since the Fit has been receiving such high marks for reliability all over the world.

Thanks Hungarian83, I feel much better about trying to get the first US year Fits now. I was about to sit and wait until the following year. Now let's just hope there enough for the demand that the dealers won't do their own little markup.

The transmission the US will get in the Fit will be different than the 7 speed AT CVT that Honda uses in the rest of the world. We will get the 5 speed AT, Other than that, it's the same car. We will also only get the 1.5 litre Vtec engine. The 1.3 litre will not be available here. I guess Honda doesn't want any claims that the Fit is under powered.

With the groundbreaking for Honda's new assembly line in Greensburg, IN next month, I believe that plant--which will come online in about 18-24 months--will produce as its first model the second-generation Honda Fit for the North American market. Honda could probably produce as many as 175,000 Fits from that plant on a per year basis.

I thought Honda said 200,000 per year? And that they made it official that this new plant will build the next-gen Fit?

Given the strong demand for the Fit now and the fact that Honda stated they want to build fuel-efficient cars at the new Greensburg plant, it's almost obvious that the first models produced at Greensburg will be the Honda Fit (and maybe some Honda Civic production). When the Greensburg plant starts operating about 18-24 months from now, that will be just in time for the Fit to go through the full model change (FMC).

Do you think Honda will make any changes to the current version in the next year or two?

I seriously doubt it. They have a 6-month backlog on this model - why spend money to change it when they will be reengineering it for the whole world in two years?
