Honda Fit: Buy Now, Or Wait For the 2008 Model? by johnnyvj

Well, I'm definitely torn here.

On the one hand, all indications are that the Fit is a gem. However, good luck on getting one at below MSRP, and the car definitely does have its annoyances-- no dead pedal, no seat height adjustment, no center armrest/mini-console, thin el cheapo 'carpeting', hideous wheel covers on the Base, very limited availability of the tan interior on the Fit Sport (only white Fit Sports have it).

Given that, would it just be better to wait for the '08 Fit?

Generally, the first year run of a car has the poorest reliability, plus Honda may fix some of the car's shortcomings for '08. Also, I would think that I would be able to pay under MSRP once the initial feeding frenzy has subsided.

Lot of benefits to be had by waiting, but conversely, waiting does suck too...

. . . the '08 model won't be out until the fall of 2007. Personally, I don't want to wait THAT long, in the hope that Honda will add a dead pedal, seat adjustment (I find the position comfortable), arm rest & a locking fuel filler door.

This has been announced somewhere, or just assumed?

It was an assumption I made based on my last 30 years of Honda ownership, but you're right, it could be earlier.

But, what if we are on a similar cycle as we are with the '07 Fit? What if two or three years pass after the JDM introduction before we see a NA introduction?

The Edmunds article doesn't specifically state it will be in the 2008 model year, it simply states, "Honda is working on a hybrid version of the Fit. That's the next-generation Fit, which is due to arrive in 2008." - where 2008 is the year it would be released, making it a 2009 model... maybe.

Yeahhh.... that's cool n' all dewalt, but I really wasn't talking about the next-gen Fit, but rather the next model year of the current generation Fit.

Though that is a cool article... if they really can deliver a hybrid Fit at only a $1800 price delta from the regular model, that will be something worth buying. You would make up that kind of price delta with just 5 years of fuel savings, and over the lifetime of the car would come out well ahead... not many hybrids can say that yet, unfortunately.

I'll wait, for two reasons:

1) The package has to be polished, to clean up the annoyances. I was surprised that a car that Honda knows inside and out can have so many (admittedly) minor issues. North America is the last market they’ve adapted it to, not the first.

2) I want to see all the competition before making a decision. Nissan launches the Versa in a few months, and there'll be a new, low end Volkswagen by the end of the year. That leaves Mazda, if not the European Swift from Suzuki, to join the party. That should happen relatively soon, as I doubt they will want to be left out. So I’m reluctant to commit right now. But don't tell my girlfriend that!
