I have been glancing over the responses and I for one am excited about this new Astra. I think it is going to ba a top seller in its class. Much nicer than that dorky Civic or Mazda whatever its called.

This is just another block in the wall that is going to separate the real car enthusiasts and the posuers from importland. People are going to flock to the Saturn dealers to get their hands on one of these. I predict serious declines in sales of the competition.

yup... and if they keep it clean with the styling (no changes); bring the 3-door, 5-door and 4-door; and make it in Europe (great quality) then BEWARE OF SATURN!
I`d like to see if Ford will finally decide to bring the Euro Focus over... probably not though as they already made another facelift for the `08 model... eh... well

Despite interest in the new 2008 Saturn Astra, Automtotive News says that GM plans to import only 20,000 to 40,000 of the vehicles each year from Europe. Those figures will go up once GM retools a plant in North America to build the car. Saturn sold more than 100,000 IONs in 2005.

just saw that on the net... I guess it`s get them first before they start producing them in the States...

Saturn just announced that we`ll just get the 1.8l inline 4 with 140hp, at least for a start. Prices should start around $16,000 for the Astra when it goes on sale this fall. 3 and 5 door config, no 4 door at the moment.

all the best

If the rear seat room is as good as the photo suggests then sedan buyers might give it a look. If on the other hand they have just slid the front seat forward to make it look like there is leg room then Eh, why would I buy this? It's a cobalt 4 door. We already have that. I had told my dealer I wanted the 2 door hatchback but once I saw that GM USA had restyled the rear bumper I changed my mind to the five door hatch. The sole change on the five door car is the badge.

IMO the 5-door looks more exciting than the 4, but then again I`m probably the only one who likes hatches.

Nope, you're not the only one. I had a Focus ZX5 for a few years and thought it was much more practical than the 4 door sedan.

I prefer the 5-door Astra as well. I wonder if GM will eventually put in the 2.4L 172HP engine into it.

Or if there will be a Red Line version .... or a Green Line.

So much we still don't know!

I read the Astra is actually SHORTER than the Ion it replaces. Meantime, the Civic gets bigger every new cycle. Will the Astra compete with the Honda Fit???.......Saturn should retain the Ecotec four for the Astra. It will retain American jobs, plus it's a superb engine........I don't see the Astra as a Civic-beater. Just seems like a rebadged Euro econobox, designed for narrow European roads.

Opel Astra- length: 167.3" width: 68.4" height: 54.8"

Saturn Ion- length: 184.5" width: 67.2" height: 57.4"

Honda Civic- length: 174.8" width: 68.9" height: 53.5"

Honda Fit- length: 157.4" width: 66.2" height: 60.0"

The Astra does get a 1.8L Ecotec 4, but the European version since it's built in Europe anyway.
