Saturn Astra winner

I thought GM hit a home run with the Cobalt when it came out and the Cobalt SS is still a Class leader but the new Saturn Astra may be taken to the next level. Sharp styling, powerful silky smooth engine, 17" rims combined with a high quality interior and Saturn reliability and quality and GM has yet another hit on their hands. This is going to be the most popular car of 2008 and become one of the top sellers behind the #1 selling Malibu and the Cadillac CTS. Only the Chevrolet Silverado will bring more buyers.
This like most other GM's will be flying off the lots and they won't be able to build enough of them.

The Astra?
GM is only importing maybe 20,000 of them. It will be outsold by the smart fortwo.

That is initial, once the demand picks up GM will need to import more. We are talking about the hottest small car on the market here. GM would be stupid to put a bottleneck around it only to see those people defect for some cheap crappy Civic or something. Lutz hasn't let us down yet, I think he knows what's best. The Astra is destined to be a top seller just like the Malibu, Cadillac CTS, GMT900s and Lambdas.

If the Astra does take off, I'm sure GM might want to import more, depending on just how awful the Euro-dollar exchange rate is and how much (if any) excess capacity the factory in Belgium has. Still, I doubt we'll see any more than 50k come off the boat before production gets set up on this side of the pond.

I think you are forgetting that The Astra will suffer from a smaller dealer base then the Malibu and other Chevy cars. Nice car but still not sure how many people are rushing to Saturn dealerships after such products as the L-series, Ion and Relay.

Speaking of rushing to Saturn dealers. Over the weekend I took a ride thru my local Saturn dealers lot to see if they had an Astra yet. If they did they must have sold it because they did not have any in stock.
Are they out yet ? They seem to be a long time coming.

My guess is they are not out yet. I've been hearing about this car for over a year. I will be in the market for a car some time later this year. With my commute, fuel efficiency is important.

Astra availability

I believe the Astra is to go on sale starting today (2 January).
Not sure what the delay was; perhaps it had to do with getting enough inventory to all the Saturn dealers around the country for the launch.
However, with no aux jack offered with the Astra, I'm not terribly interested (and this from a guy who has 4 Saturns in the family!)

my understanding is that its on sale this week. I wonder if they will do TV ads or just stick to print ads. I have seen several print ads for this car in the monthly car mags over the past couple months.

I saw the print ads also. That is why I thought it was out already. Maybe Saturn is trying to build the anticipation.
