I honestly didn't notice the engine noise during my test drives, but I did learn from them that there's a big difference in engine speed between the AT and manual versions of the Fit Sport at highway speeds:

Fit Sport manual 80 MPH: approx. 3900 RPM
Fit Sport automatic 80 MPH: approx. 2900 RPM

tim,
Sorry it took so long to respond; I just now saw the question. I test drove at Honda Cars of McKinney (they had 3 cars on 4/20 none I wanted), but I have since looked at Lute Riley (also none) and Bankston (they say they will have my car in 6 days). Looks like MSRP is a given right now and you need to leave a deposit to secure one. I love the 5sp but went with the Sport AT after reading 2 reviews that gave it great marks, and after seeing the RPM comparisons on MT vs AT at highway speeds.

Crossing my fingers I am in a Fit next week and not having one...

After a year of driving her Jazz 1.4/7-spd CVT my wife is still in love with the car and I must admit I also like driving it. There have been no problems with the car whatsoever and interior space is amazing - as is the seating flexibility. The 7-spd CVT is a hoot to drive and intelligent too. I once rolled up to a junction in 7th, (forgetting I was in manual mode), and the 'box just shifted into 1st again as car stopped; ready for the getaway. Thought I detected a slight mutter of "what a dumbo" from the 'box but I may have been mistaken.

Overall a cracking car and rated "Best in Class" in the UK, at least. Much sought after in the used-car market as well.

Now, if they'd only lower it a little, put on some wider rubber and fit the 2.2 cDTi engine I'd have one as well.

The "unfits" of Honda Fit by goodwrench

I was excited about the innovation in engineering design of Honda Fit. Then came some disappointment when I actually test drove a Fit at a local dealer. Here are the things that I think Honda really screwed up (intentionally?):

1. On Sport AT model, the paddle shifter is a steering-mounted control. This means when you are turning, it's very difficult to shift gears. There are two shifters: upshift and downshift. Each mounted on each side of the steering and they turn with the wheel!

2. The fuel door is not secure! This means someone could drain out your precious gasoline or dumping sugar into your gas tank. I don't know why Honda would get so cheap by deleting the basic feature like remote-release fuel door.

On a more positive notes, the car was rather nimble for its engine size. It handles surprising well on sharp manuvers. Brakes are decent. One thing that gets me to consider a Fit seriously is the versatility. The seats are cleverly designed for multiple useful configuations.

Overall I would buy a Fit today if the engineers at Honda were more sensitive to the need for a lockable fuel cap or remote-release fuel door, which is standard in all other Honda models (except Element). The other thing that annoys me is the game most dealership plays: "dealer mark-up pricing"! Due to the "shortage" of supply, dealers are trigger-happy with outrageous mark-ups. Again, here Honda fails to project the demands for Fit. Either that or Honda purposely keep the supply low to artifically create a high demand, knowing gasoline prices are skyrocketing.

At the moment, I am leaning towards Scion X-A because Honda seems to be too arrogant to deal with.

1) I initially found the same thing as an issue. This is my first time using paddle shifters. But I found if I get to second prior to making the sharp turn it's a non issue. I can't see you making that sharp of a turn to create an issue in any gear higher.

2) You can buy a locking gas cap for like $40.

Plenty of dealers in Ma not marking up.
I didn't like the Xa, seemed smaller to me.

Now you can go out and buy that Fit

When is the last time you've heard of someone's gas getting stolen from their car??? I never have, so to me a remote cover would be a waste.

It happened here just a short while ago. It was in the news. Some woman had almost her entire tank siphoned out. With soaring gas prices, it may become more and more common. Yes, you can buy a cheap locking gas cap for $40 or less, but why should consumers have to do that? Remote release gas doors may have been extra-cost options 25 years ago, but now they are as basic as tires and steering wheels.

Thank you! You've put it so well! Yes, it's a non-sense to buy a lockable gas cap for a 2007 car. The fact that Honda is "cheap" on the remote release fuel door is very disappointing. From the design and manufacturing point of view, it would not cost Honda that much more to offer this feature. Yet, for some stupid reasons, they decided to leave it out, exposing the car owners to potential cost of cleaning the fuel line and/or loosing gasoline! I remember Subaru got a huge negative reaction from Forester's enthusiasts for not offering the remote-release fuel door. Subaru then quickly corrected the design.

Fit is about two grands MORE than others in its class. Yet it is missing some most basic features! I have begun to lose faith in those guys at Honda! BTW, I've owned 5 Honda models ranging from 80's to 00's.

Just to pull out of a parking space, the control would already be in a very awkward position. Most people don't shift to 2nd gear at 5 mph. The only situation that the paddle shifters would be useful in is straight line paths - at for duration of shifting or very small-angle turns.

By the way, it would be good if Honda brings back Accord stationwagon or Civic hatchback (2 or 4 doors). I guess the Fit is what Honda's thinking in response to this market.

Perhaps Honda listens well and would make improvements for next-year Fit.

I think for the mid-cycle refreshening, you will see a remote release gas door and driver seat height adjuster, amongst the upgrades. Those 2 are basic features found in the most basic of ecnono-cars.
