Thanks, that is good to hear that Honda has done such a fantastic job of sound deadening that the car is not loud at all cruising at 4000 rpms and I won't even know I am going 80. That would mean it is probably the quietest small economy car ever built, since with every other small car I have driven over 30+ years, it was pretty obvious it was going 80.

I am trying to figure out why 4000 rpms would sound a lot quieter in 5th gear rather than 2nd gear.

Anyway, even if the stick is just as quiet as the automatic on the highway (which I still have some doubts about), I like the fact that the revs are a lot lower with the automatic, from a fuel-saving perspective.

Logically, that makes sense. I wonder why EPA highway ratings of the manual vs. auto don't bear that out.

Hmm, I think we both know the reason the engine noise is less pronounced at 80 mph is because it is being drowned out by the other noise entering the cabin. The engine itself will be making the same amount of noise at 4000 rpm regardless of speed.

But the transmission may make more noise in the higher gears, and certainly wind and road noise will be much more pronounced at 80 mph than at 40 mph. Which means that in fact sound deadening for the cabin in the Fit may not be that great, if a notably loud engine note at 4000 rpm is lost in all the other noise entering the cabin at high speeds.

Hatchbacks are always louder at speed than their sedan counterparts, because the rear wheel wells are in the cabin instead of insulated by being in the trunk. This has been noted in various reviews of the Yaris, which comes as both a sedan and a hatch.

Yeah, you're right. Honda has never been known to make particularly quiet cars. So I doubt they did an about-face with an entry-level model. But of course, everything is relative. If you're coming from an old Honda Civic, then the Fit may seem quiet.

I think it has something to do with the relatively low speeds at which the EPA does its testing. I really think I can get better fuel economy cruising at 60 at 2250 rpms than at 3000+ rpms (someone with a stick Fit can fill in that number if they wish).

Sounds to me like you're right. I just checked the EPA site, and they appear to assume a fairly crowded highway, as their hwy estimate is based on an average speed of 48 mph.

That is my #1 gripe about their vehicles. I actually find the Fit more pleasant, noise wise, than our 04 oddy. On old concrete surfaces, where the rocks show through badly, going 65-80 the oddy sounds about like a jet airplane. The Fit is much better. It is also much better than previous generation civic or crv. I find some wind noise above 60, but it doesn't bother me. Not like the new generation civic with the bad whistle, or ridgeline with the windsheild noise.

I can't say if the automatic is quieter (although I am sure it is), because I have yet to even see an AT Fit/Jazz, let alone drive it, but my point is that the loud buzzy sounds that people worry about from a car doing 4000 rpm at 80 mph just aren't there. No doubt it is the sound of the wind and the road drowning out the engine, but taking the MT Fit on the highway is not an unpleasant experience at all.

That being said, the US Fit 5MT could certainly make good use of a sixth gear.

It certainly could, and that is not as far-fetched an idea as it may seem. The new Civic 5-door in Europe has a 6-speed manual standard on all three of the engine choices, including the 1.4 which is the L13A, just a smaller version of the L15A used in the JDM and USDM Fit.
