Yes, I realize the downgrade in mpg on the versa, but still am anxious to test drive it and compare against the FIT. Plus, the downgraded number is still just an estimate. If the build quality appears excellent, and if the ride quality is as good or better than the FIT, it will be a very tough call to make. I know the Versa has the center arm rest that I really want, so that is one automatic advantage, at least for me (even though I realize I can get an aftermarket one somewhere for the FIT). Time will tell, its kinda fun test driving and comparing before deciding

Anyone have the RPM 75 or 80 mph in AT or MT for the Fit. This is important since I am driving a lot on freeway. I guess I can live with less than 3500rpm 80mph.

It is about 4000 at 80 mph for the MT. This sounds like a lot, but I can tell you it is really not that loud and it is completely bearable.

I've had to drive to work twice so far and I have been staying between 70 and 75 when on the freeway. Motor is very quiet at those speeds. None of the "buzzy" sound I have heard in some other cars.

I have 5 sp mt sport, and agree that the noise at 80 mph is fine - this little motor loves to hum along. However, I am still disappointed in the fifth gear (or lack of 6th), as a slight adjustment could save a lot of gas. Also, I still wonder if I should expect the motor not to last as long as an AT version because it is working harder? Is that a valid theory?

Yes, I think it has validity. But if it lasts, say 300K miles instead of 400K, does it really matter?

The engine will outlast the rest of the car most likely. 206,000 miles on my Integra that revs about the same as the Fit, and the engine is great.

Oh... I didn't realize that. So THAT'S what the 'S' is for on the shifter.

Boy do I feel stupid now.

I finally got to drive the Fit tonight, and got to compare the Base MT with the AT. Here is my report:

I think the Fit crosses the "buy" bar for me, although I am still not happy about the driving position. But as I am not in a big rush, I will wait for the IIHS crash test results on the Fit and its competitors, and for the Versa to debut so I can drive it. I'll probably wait to drive the all-new Sentra, Elantra, and Corolla also and see what changes Honda makes to the Fit for '08--adding a driver's seat height adjuster maybe, or perhaps even a hybrid version or even an all-new model as has been discussed elsewhere in Town Hall.

(I would have replied to that post, but the discussion is read-only)

"To simulate driving on a freeway, I put it into 2nd and got the revs up to about 4000 (at about 40 mph). It was really loud to my ears."

If you put it in 2nd at 4000 rpm it will be loud. If you put it in 1st at 4000 rpm it will be even louder and if you just sit in the car stopped in neutral at 4000 rpm, it will be screaming.

I'm not sure why a car does this, or why it sounds this way, but if you drove the car at 80 mph (4000 rpm in 5th gear), the noise is completely bearable. Not sure why...maybe it's the other sounds (wind and the road), but it is not loud at all when cruising on the highway. My previous car was a 3-speed AT Corolla. At 80 mph I would literally have to raise my voice just to make myself heard. Nothing of the sort in the Fit. The only reason you will know you are going 80 (other than the speedometer) is the slightly more prounced engine braking, but not the noise.
