I've had a deposit down since early Feb. The dealer just called today and they have a Sport FIT AT on site and I'm going after work to test drive it.

Unfortunately, I want a Basic MT and they only have AT's coming in so we are going to have to find a dealer to trade with.

I'm in Western MA.

I just spoke to Boch in Norwood (near boston). They got 1 of each type (Base Man, Base Auto, Sport Man, Sport Auto) in today. I will be test driving the Sport Auto tomorrow. Might be a place to look if you can not find something closer. Clair Honda in the same area also said they had several, but I am not sure which types.

Okay. I’ve made it clear on this forum how annoyed I’ve been with Honda and the way the Fit has been introduced in the US. I still don’t like the way that it has been marketed here, the lack of info to customers and dealers, the wait for a decent B segment 4 door hatch, the general corporate attitude that Americans just want big, dumb cars with lots of knobs—and that we have had to suck hind Fit to France. However…

I just drove the Fit and all the concerns I have heard about on this forum proved to be untrue. It’s fantastic. Loved the way it drove.

I Fits me Fine.

But then they tried to sell me. It’s a Sport MT. They are asking 17, 710. Yeah. 2K above the 15, 150 + 550 MSRP. What are they offering for that 2K?

Interior trim with floor mats and a cargo tray: 595.00
Goes for about 250.00 at college Honda.

Window tint: 395.00
200.00 around town maybe?

Exterior “protection” (little pieces of plastic molding), wheel locks, and pinstripes. 995.00
My guess: about 200.00

That’s about 650.00 worth of stuff marked up to 2K.

As I was leaving, the salesman offered 17,000.00 with 1500.00 trade in for my 92 Civic w/218K on it.
Oh, and 4.9% financing.
My old car is really worth about 500.00 trade in. I was going to sell it for 900.00.

In other words, they’re offering MSRP plus about 300.00 with that way high trade they’re giving me. And I don’t have to worry about the hassle of selling it.

BTW: It’s Milano red. My current Honda is Milano red. I love the color…for a few years. Reds ALWAYS fade. I wanted white, but nobody got white Sport MT Fit round here.

What do you other posters think about this deal?

Sport = Red

Also consider sales tax savings on the trade-in (about $100 or so depending on state) plus your advertising costs and time for selling the old car yourself. Since the car is brand-new, maybe all the extra stuff isn't added to it yet and you could say "no thanks" to some of it (like pinstripes--ugh!), dropping the price down a little more.

Keep it waxed--it won't fade.

I like pinstripes. But to each his own.

The only thing they hadn’t added was the window tint.

If I were to get it at 17K, I’d ask for the window tinting, mud guards, and a cargo cover. That, with the trade-in price they’re giving me would bring it down to near MSRP plus reasonable prices for the add-ons.

Red does look nice.

I’m this close to going back and seeing if they’ll go for the above deal.

Great car. I'm comparing this to my Honda Civic '97 DX 4 door with 175 k miles. First impression was the room in the car was incredible for it's size, much more functional than a sedan. High quality ride very similar to my civic in terms of driving and acceleration. Overall, visibility was excellent. This will be a much easier auto for the elderly to get in and out of than the civic. Try picking up grandpa sometime in a civic. Dislikes- lack of a shift side armrest. it was immediately noticeable. Although interior layout was good, the 2 tone color scheme and steering wheel seem a little campy. Road noise at 60 mph was a little more than I hoped. I'm actually in the market for the base manual. Clearly the positives outweigh any negatives. They really could call this car the new civic. It goes back to Honda roots. Bottom line- I'm doing the 180k service on my civic next week, new timing belt (89k on the present belt and I don't take chances), new gaskets, wires etc. . I'll probably buy sometime this fall. I suspect there will be a waiting list. I could have bought today at msrp, destination, and TTL with no mark up. Good luck everyone. Doug

I am debating mostly between the Fit and the Civic Sedan. I drove a Civic LX manual transmission, Civic EX automatic transmission, and a Fit Sport manual transmission.

First because the two manuals had just come in and had not been prepped, I drove the Civic Auto. I was surprised that I had adequate headroom with the moonroof. I still think moonroofs are a waste, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. The acceleration was adequate being sapped by the transmission, but I almost instantly felt the "lugbug" at 1500 rpm. As expected, I did not like the Automatic.

Next I drove the Fit Sport manual. It was very spacious and airy inside. The seat though not adjustable heightwise fit me just fine. If anything I could take the seat just a bit higher because of the excellent headroom. The handling and shifter were very good. The power was just adequate. I learned to shift at a higher rpm than was necessary with the Civic or my Accord. Very solid power for the class, and similar to the Civic Auto, but not a match for the 2003 Accord manual 4 cylinder that I had (understandable). The glovebox was a little small, and I would definitely get a right armrest as much for storage as comfort. The backseat and storage room was great. The A/C was fine but did not work as well as the Civic or my Accord. For information, the temperature was 91 degrees (equal to our hot summer temps so it was good for testing purposes - should have been 70 today if normal). The engine was spinning about 3450 at 70 mph.

The Civic manual was last. It had better than expected power and seemed equal to my 2003 Accord. The handling was good but not as good as the Fit. The emergency brake handle hit right at a bad spot on my right leg. The two tier dash is cool, but would take a little getting used to. The air conditioning was very strong like my old Accord. It was spinning about 3000 rpm at 70 mph.

I am leaning Fit, but both vehicles were impressive. I would not get either with an Auto. The Fit would be too slow and no fun. The Civic has the lugbug problem, and it saps an otherwise powerful car with the manual.

Sorry for the long post.

Excellent report on your driving impressions.

The new Fit sounds a lot like my 2004 Scion xA: high rpm at 80 mph with a stick; harsh suspension. These are things it took months for me to figure out on the xA - otherwise it was a blast to drive.

It sounds like what a lot of us would like, would be a Fit sized more in line with the Civic - there are a lot of vehicles like this in Europe - the Touran from VW, the Renault Espace. Over here, the Mazda5, but that doesn't have the innovative design of the Fit.

So any thoughts - is the Fit or the Scion xA a better buy?

Out of curiosity, what is the rpm at 80 mph on your xA?

I feel the suspension on the Fit is somewhat stiff, but definitely not harsh. It is quite refined and well-dampened. I took it out on some windy roads today and it handles well with the 14" tires. I think the 14" tires also dampen out some of the bumps too.
The steering is wonderful on windy roads. It's very light and responsive, but you always feel in control of the car. My only worry about the Fit before I bought it was the drive-by-wire throttle (not used on the EUDM Jazz). It has been perfectly fine and just as responsive as a throttle cable.

I haven't driven the xA, but I sat in it. The materials in the Fit feel nicer, the interior is far more versatile, and the dashboard is laid out in a more logical pattern, IMO.
