"Anyone think I could get a Santa Fe GLS FWD for $17K + tax + registration?"

Even if you're talking about the manual transmission, that's quite a discount. Invoice is $20,800. Minus the $2K rebate, you're looking at $18,8. If you're looking for an automatic, add $1200 to that price.

My research last week did not suggest that dealers would be willing to sell a car for $1800 under invoice. They don't seem that desperate; and the news this week that Hyundai was one of the big C4C winners seems like they're not going to be giving these cars away.

Of course, it's all about the inventory they have. I got the best deal from a dealer in a somewhat rural area who had 8-9 Santa Fes lined up on his lot. And he was able to trade one of them with another dealer to get me the color/options I wanted. So if you have a dealer who's overstocked, maybe.

If you get a deal that good, come back here and let us know!

I've already gotten quotes of $18,5 for a 09 GLS FWD with auto trans. but that is too high for us right now. Hyundai is giving the dealerships a lot of dealer cash this month to sell them.

OK, so here's the gist of September incentives... by 1hhead

I have yet to close this deal, so anything's possible, but here's what the Sales team at my local dealer explained about September Santy incentives...

$2K cash back plus Gas Lock for all buyers (added Gas Lock for Sept).

Plus an additional $1K added in Sept for a trade-in allowance to sweeten the deal if you have a trade.

Soooo.... Just stick to your Edmunds price on your trade-in plus $1K to avoid having them try to keep that difference. On a trade deal you're looking at $3K plus Gas lock difference. That's pretty darn convincing to me. The sales person I'm dealing with is someone I've known for years and isn't playing around so there you go folks. Happy Hunting!

The 1K trade in allowance is in lieu on a 1K dealer cash incentive. So, no big deal. Last month there was a $1250 dealer incentive.

So, really the only extra incentive this month is gas lock. I'm not sold.

In October prices are going to drop.

I have a bizarre follow-up to this buying experience:

I negotiated this deal with the salesman on the evening of Sept 3rd. Since it was closing time and I needed my wife to also sign on the purchase, they told me to come back on Sept 5th to finalize things. The salesman also wanted to get the final approval from either the GM or owner (can't remember which), since this was a below-invoice deal.

I come in on the 5th, and we go through the terms of the deal again. We are only $12 apart (due to them assuming 15 days of interest before my trade-in is paid off vs. me assuming 5 days).

The salesman asks me to initial indicating that I'll buy today on those terms and he'll get the sales manager's approval. He comes back and says, "oops, I made a mistake. The used car manager was already assuming $1,000 of bonus cash in your trade-in offer, but didn't tell me that before."

So essentially, they were raising the price of the car by a $1,000 right before it was time to sign. The salesman seemed somewhat embarrassed, so I like to think it was an honest mistake, but given that we had the used car manager and sales manager involved in the process just two days prior, I have doubts.

This really soured what was otherwise a decent, low-pressure experience at this dealer. I walked and won't be bringing my business to them.

That's not bizarre.. perfectly normal..

Not nice... but not rare.. You negotiate a price on one day, then come back the next day to complete the sale and the numbers change.

Let's put it this way... you never know what the real sale price is, until you are finished the paperwork and driven away..

A local Denver dealer (the one I bought my SE from a year or so ago) is advertising an '09 GLS with AWD, MSRP $24,470 for $16,795 - and you STILL get the $1.49 gas for a year.
