We lucked out and didn't get much more in the way of rain, other than what hit us on Friday. There was just enough sprinkle on Saturday to make me put the top up on the show field. And coming back home today, we ran into a light drizzle. We put the top up at a rest stop when we got back into Maryland, but luckily it didn't rain hard enough to make the car start leaking any more. Depending on how the weather is tomorrow, I might take the Catalina to work, so I can fill up again. I topped off just before coming back home, and I'm curious to see what kind of mileage it got coming back. While we were running back and forth to the hotel, going out to eat, driving around aimlessly, etc, I figure I got around 12.5 mpg, in a mix of local and highway. So again, not too horrible, for a car that size I guess.

Replying to: andre1969 (Jun 28, 2009 1:40 pm) Grbeck and I had a close call Saturday night on the way home from Carlisle. Some knucklehead in a Buick LaCrosse almost rear-ended the Brougham as we were about to merge onto another road close to his place. It's a tricky merge and you've got to pay attention. No, it was not my girlfriend angry at me for leaving her home all day! Other than that, the Brougham ran flawlessly averaging about 21 MPG for the 263-mile round trip.

It didn't amount to much more than a light drizzle. At highway speeds, the air flow probably would have kept it out of the car if I left the top down! I drove the Catalina to work today and filled up. I ended up going around 324 miles total, between driving up there and back, and various running around. Fuel economy came out to around 13.7. Not too hideous I guess. While I was impressed with that 16.8 I hit on the ride up, going back I took a scenic back route that took us over a mountain ridge. Probably not too good for the fuel economy! Plus, the flow of traffic going back was faster than coming up, which no doubt hurt.

Replying to: andre1969 (Jun 29, 2009 7:05 am) I ended up with much more good news than bad on that ER visit so I'll take it. I have all sorts of wacky health issues so the visit wasn't a huge surprise. Don't worry that this is what happens to yo after 50. I've had issues all my life.... So when do we hit the real fun - when you start doing up the DeSoto?

Replying to: fezo (Jun 29, 2009 9:48 am) Yeah, usually you have to go out west to see 57-59 Mopars since they were rust buckets just like the Fords of that era. But I still love those mid to late fiftes Virgil Exner Mopars and some of them still look real good like the Chrysler 300, Plymouth Fury and DeSoto Adventurer. How about a Chrysler trapezoidal 300 grill and DeSoto 3 vertical light tail? Don't forget the rear antennas! |

Replying to: parm (Jun 29, 2009 7:45 pm) I drove my '76 LeMans today, and so far, so good. Sometimes it'll get fidgety on the first start of the day. However, today it did just fine, and I hadn't started it since Sunday afternoon. I would have liked to have put both the Catalina and the LeMans in the GM show, but I didn't have a second driver. One of my friends went up with me, but he's not that knowledgeable about older cars. He's afraid of anything where you have to pump the gas pedal before starting it! They had the class for the full-size Pontiacs and the 1961-81 Tempest/LeMans side by side, so it would've been kinda neat to see the cars on the show field, almost side by side! They had the GTO in a separate class, as well as the Grand Prix, so the Tempest/LeMans group was pretty sparse. A couple '66-67 models showed up, a 77.5 Can Am, and maybe couple '68-72's. |

Replying to: eastwoodco (Jul 08, 2009 6:11 am) I'll be out that way in the beginning of August, for the car show at the Das Awkscht Fescht in Macungie, PA. I have my '67 Catalina convertible registered, but if something happens to it, I have my '76 LeMans as a backup. And if that one gets cranky, I guess I can always fall back on my '79 5th Ave! **Edit...I just googled the Deutsche Classic, and see it's all German cars. Seems kinda ironic to have it in Fleetwood! I wonder how Cadillac owners take to that!
